I’ve read that it is a good idea to protect your engines by adding a replaceable fuse between a Lionel 1033 and the track. 1) Is this really a worthwhile idea? 2) Does it just go in line on the common or where? 3) What size fuse? 4) How do I tell if a fuse is a “quick blow” or not? 5) What type of fuse holder should I use and where can I get them?

A 1033 is rated at 90 watts. Given the maximum “rated” voltage is 18, that means 5 amps is the maximum rating. (90/18=5). This will protect the transformer. You would need to measure the current for each engine to determine the right fuse for it.
You can get blade type fuses and in line fuseholders at any auto parts store. Most all blade fuses are fast blow type but it will be stated on the container what type of fuse it is.
For postwar engines I would use a 5 amp slow blow fuse. For modern engines I would use 5 amp fast blow. For modern engines I would also install a 36 volt bi directional zener diode between the leads for spike supression to protect the electronics. These are available from Mouser for about a dollar. Radio shack carries a variety of in line fuses and fuse holders. Normally the hot ungrounded center rail feed would be fused.
