Hello everyone. New member here from Atlantic Canada. I am in the process of studding up a small area in my basement 12 x 12 for a layout. I need a plan to help me get motivated on this project. Continuous running and a little switching are both on my want list. I have a few obstacles that need to be overcome. First the building drain comes through the wall in one corner and up along the ceiling through the proposed room. This can be changed outside, taken back behind the room and through new hole in cement wall. Second I only have six foot six floor to ceiling so a dropped ceiling is not an option. Third, water comes in this area from other wall of basement. This can be fixed by cutting a hole in the floor and installing pump in trouble area. I should mention that the water currently exits the basement via a floor drain in center of layout room. I plan having an around the walls layout with a drop in section where the door is placed. The biggest obstacle for me having mentioned the previous problems is I need a plan to work towards. There seems to be a wealth of knowledgeable people here who I am sure can start me on the path to drawing something up. Thanks for listening to me ramble. I am looking forward to hearing your suggestions. As I mentioned previously lack of a workable trackplan is my biggest stumbling block. Thanks Kirk
Hey Kirk, I’m using the Spokane Pasco & Wallace trackplan featured in the Sept. 1992 MR, and also in the Kalmbach book 48 Top Noch Trackplans. It has continuous running and switching. It designed to fit into an 11x11 foot room. and it has room to grow. It’s an L shaped layout with a penninsula jutting out a 45 degree angle from the connection of the two sides of the L. It’s a pretty good trackplan, and it’s been easy to build so far.

What does the room look like?
Here is my plan. It is a 12’ x 12’ area.
I am likely going to make 1 or 2 minor changes before I fini***he layout. It has a lower level staging area, which is optional. You can click on my link below to see pictures and construction progress.
Nice! Walk-in around the wall design. Very good.
Modeltrainman if you look at the bottom right hand side of Jbinkley’s plan where the loop is that is where the door will be positioned. I like his plan but the door being where it is limits having any loops there, hence the option for a lift out. The wall at the right and top of his plan are outside walls. The wall at top of his plan has a window. I could keep or close off. What do you think about that?
Hi transatlanticrr: Welcome to the forms. I checked your profile hoping to find out what scale you were going to model in. That information would help us help you. Do you have a local hobby shop or some place where you could get a look at some of the track plan books? You might also try searching the Model Railroader index for track plans. Myself I’m in HO and am fortunate to have a basement for my layout.
Best of luck to you.
