Never too old or new for scrapping I guess.

Credit Rob Schreiner for this very intersting photo of the NRE Dixmoor facility and the very old (F unit) and rather new (Metra F40C) equipment being scrapped there.

Is there any way to view the picture larger? I tried clicking on it but no size change.

Thanks, nice picture.

You are ever so welcome, Mr. Railfan.

I wonder how many different railroads are represented in that picture. Thanks for the photo.

Tom

  1. I’m a little surprised to see the F40 there… Must of had some kind af major breakdown that was too expensive to repair.

  2. I’m even more surprised to see the F40 intact. I would have thought that Metra would have stripped a lot of useable parts off - windsheilds, air conditioners, lights, etc.

Does the company that’s scrapping an engine buy the engine intact and then sell useable parts back to the railroads?

So many canditates for restoration and preservation…[sigh]

[#ditto]

Well,

They don’t scrap all of them…they refurbish some and send them down to South America among other places…

Ask Pedro, he has quite a few of them!

My guess is the Metra unit is to be rebuilt or refurbished for someone somewhere.

It used to be that a lot of the stuff seen down in Dixmoor would be fixed up and sold/leased to somebody else. I’m sure that some of what we’re seeing in this shot will probably not, though. Ed could be right about the F40C.

(BTW, I definitely don’t like the neighborhood down there–it would take quite a bit to get me to drive around NRE any more!)

I’m with Carl,

Most of what is in the photo is junkers…or on their way to industries to live a little longer as

in plant switchers.

The reason I am making that guess is that we got quite a few C30s for export from NRE…must have sent a dozen B30-7A,(cabless boosters from BN) that had been slightly refurbished to Brazil, along with I lost count of how many C30-7s that way…all stenciled with NRE’s reporting marks.

About the only “nice” place I know of to railfan from is Mookies spot, and I dont think I would go there alone after dark.

I"m not sure I understand why the surprise at the F40C, unless you’re confusing it with the F40PH-2s that are still in service. No reason to repair the fairly hard to lease/sell F40C if it had any type of problem, and it’s not one of the three that Metra retained.

As to stripping it, I don’t think those parts would fit on the F40PH-2s.

Yea nice picture you got there. I’m also surpried to see a Metra engine in the grave yard of engines. That is real sad lookin in there. I’m sure some of them could have been saved for diffrent railroads but anywho like I said nice picture.

The neighborhood isn’t that bad, it’s mostly working-class and I’ve never been hassled by any of the residents. I’ve been into really bad places in the past.

Don’t be so sure that they will be scrapped. That F unit has been in the NRE yard for at least 10 years.

Bert

yeah a couple good candidates for preservation, theirs a covered wagon F unit and what looks like an RS3, the F40 might be questionable preservation wise but the other two? It should be a felony to scrap an F or an E unit today.

A slightly different view…
