New again to model Railroading with a couple of questions

I have Finally Figured out what I want to model so I guess now is the time to ask Questions.

what I have desided to model is the DM&IR and Erie Mineing company lines
Loosely around 1959.

the reason for this is Erie was running F9’s in a Abbb and an Abba configuration with alot of ore cars 96-108 My dad worked for erie/LTV untill 1998 and he said they ran them in a ABBBB and ABBBA
and also running RS11’s

and The Reason for loosly 1959 is DM&IR is they where running a Baldwin Steam Locomotive in a 2-8-8-2 converted to a 2-8-8-4 config
however I may go with a later year to model and just include the steamer…

here are some pictures of the LTV/erie trains…

here is a photo of the DM&IR steam

here is some of the LTV ORE DOCK

this is what I have planned so far for my layout however it may Change
with this new way IM going to go…

The DM&IR ran everything from Freight to passengers and even iron ore and logs.

so this should give me a bit to model and being they are so closely intertwined I could include the Cloquet trerminal railroad too with a switching yard and paper mill for Logs.

the LTV/erie ru

jerge i have a rail model journal magazine that covers the DM&IR sd-9 paint scheme, not sure what the scheme was then

you might also want to check www.pentrex.com for the LTV video
also www.greenfrog.com www.traintapes.com

sorry these are the only ones i can think of right now

tom

Im not to worried about the LTV/erie portion but I am looking everywhere for DM&IR information… such as photos and maps…and what not.

The FL9 was a bit different than an F9. The FL9s were originally New Haven (and later, Penn Central, Conrail, Amtrak, Metro-North…) engines. These had the ability to run on either diesel (like most engines), or an outside third rail like an electric engine. FL9s also have a 3-axle rear truck and are longer than a straight F9.

Thanks for posting that. I’ve seen some old pics and vids of track with a third outside rail like you mentioned and never knew what it was for.Now I do! Gotta love this forum!
