I’ve been researching quarries in New England, specifically Maine (Anyone know of any more?), and I came across this cool site. Take the virtual tour!

Thanks JR…cool site!

Any research on NE quarries will lead you to Barre, VT, the “granite center of the world.” They’ve been mining the stuff around here for about 200 years now, and the holes here and there to prove it!! Lots of old railbeds, some still with ties, spikes and other refuse left behind. Makes great mountain biking trails.

The rail line today still runs up the mountainside, including one of the last remaining switchbacks in active service. We used to have alot more activity until they Bombardier plant closed down after finishing up the Acela contracts. Oh well…

I might be wrong, but I believe that the marble used in the construction of New York Central Station came from a quarry at Danby Vt and I think that quarry is still in use today. CPPedler
