New feature- thread rating: tool or sport?

suspect there’ll be loads of threads about new features that people find.

Click on the Rate icon at the top of the thread and you can give the thread a rating (how good it is, not PG, 18 or whatever).

Usefull tool or something we can make sport of??

Could be interesting - depends on how people use it.

Now if I can just figure out the forum code…

How come some have the rating button and some do not?

I noticed that Bergie’s sticky thread originally did not- until I posted. Either it comes on after so many posts, or you don’t get to see it until you participate in that thread. Off to investigate more…

Well, after checking other threads, neither rule held up.[%-)]

Here’s an idea… Treat it as a useful tool and the people who repeatedly post non-useful topics might get the idea, thus, creating a more useful all around environment. (But only if they can take a hint.)

Frankly, I wish that functionality would have been available since the advent of the coffee shop threads. It’d be interesting to see what the populous thinks of that thread.

Personly, i don’t like some of the tools and i think it is cool that we have them.

I like the new features, well done bergie, and the team!

James.

Useful tool? I’m sure, once we get used to it.

Make sport of it? I’m sure, once we get used to it!!!

Bergie,

While I understand where you’re coming from, and I admire your faith in your patrons, I don’t think I’m a fan of the new “star system.” There are a lot of threads that I read that contain some very useful information, but at the same time contain a lot of the drivel that winds up on the forum. How does one rate such a thread? Does one average out the ratings one would give the good and bad posts? I fear that some users would miss some great knowledge because of a lower star ranking in such posts.

Is there a way that we could implement a rating system for individual replies as opposed to a whole thread? I think this might be more useful as a tool than the current set-up.

BTW, it’s interesting that you mentioned the Coffee Shop threads. Do you have personal thoughts on those?

Personally,

I think the coffee shop threads serve a useful purpose.

Quite a few folks have found a home there, posting regularly in that thread, and on occasion, other threads that interest them.

But for the most part, the coffee shop threads are the hidey hole for people who are not “foamers” but still enjoy trains.

It gives them a place to participate, without having to try and impress anyone, or have a extensive knowledge or railroading.

Yes, it is almost like a chat room, but look at the folks who wouldn’t be here without something like it.

Worth the space, in my opinion, and from the number of postings in it, others think so too.

I think the DD&DS serves the purpose of being a place for off topic remarks, a little of getting to know about fellow forum members, comments about travel experiences and other stuff that might just otherwise clutter up “on topic” threads.

I don’t think it is a place to just run up post counts. For that ve haf vayss.
