Just thought it would be nice to have a single, easy-to-find thread for all the complaints and problems with the new forum style.
Matthew,
May I offer a suggestion? How 'bout instead of this culminating into a pure “gripe session”, we list what things we DO like about the new format, as well as what things we aren’t crazy about or miss from the old format? Complaints over things that are wrong are much easier to shallow when they are accompanied and balanced by praise for what things that are right.
Tom
I don’t understand why we always have to look for things to complain about. It’s going to take all of us a little while to get used to this new format. Instead of having a complaint thread let’s have a thread disscussing the new features.
[:)] I like the My Forums format that lists all the threads that I’ve either posted or posted on.
[:(] I miss seeing who is viewing a particular thread at the bottom of the page.
c’mon matt… this is rather silly…
I have had no such problems as yet
I’m going to lend some support to poor ol’ Matthew. I think his mind is in the right place, if not his heart. Let’s be fair and agree that we have had a plethora of complaining threads that have, quite frankly, cluttered up the first two days of the forum. Of course those people have legitimate beefs if things aren’t working as described/advertised, but it seems to be much more economical, if for Bergie’s sake, to have all the compaints in a single thread. I think that is what Matt was offering us, not just another thread.
Good thinking, Matt.

Edit- I guess I might as well add my own complaint. It appears that my experience with the old system, whereby I would click on the link to a particular thread on the forum title page and have to wait sometimes for up to 40 seconds for it to load, or it would time out altogether, has not changed. This phenomenon has followed me to this forum. Just happened. GRRRRRRRRR![:(!]
I see where your coming from, and yes all there has been is basically complaint threads.
Signing in on the old forum was better, and I liked the quick post option on the old one also. also the smileys were better.
I like that it’s easie to change size and color though.
I like this idea as it does put all the pros and cons on one site.
I am a new user and do not have the history behind me of the old site. I am also active on a couple of automotive sites and can offer some comparisons.
Pro: amazing what it did when I copied an article from the CBC News web site about CN wanting to bury a wrecked locomotive. ALL the formatting and even a link to the article came over in one easy copy and paste. Very cool!
Con: really poor organization, very hard for a newbie like me to find any posts more than a few days or weeks old. I suggest that people check out http://www.cartalkcanada.com/forum/index.php to get an idea of what a well organized web site looks like. The Trains/railroad forum here has 15,824 threads on 615 pages. Pretty tough to find anything old, and the search function does not seem to work all that well, so it is little help.
Why do the smileyies not have pictures?
Inserting pictures could be easier.
Some have noted how easily it is to make posts look nice but the forum has to function well to be useful. I hate having to start a new topic when there is a good chance there already is a post on it but I can not find it.

I am General Manager for a model railroad forum myself, and I just spent the last three days reorganizing our entire site, so I know first hand what kinda work goes into it. I think this site is very nice now. A lot of hard work went into all of this. Folks, this is a lot to be getting for free. Now, all of that being said, here is an idea. I might be missing something, but are there any clear cut instructions for posting pictures on the site? I haven’t found any. Being familiar with HTML coding, I don’t have any trouble myself. A lot of people don’t know HTML, so it could be difficult for them. That’s the only “problem” I’ve seen so far, and it’s easy to correct.
in a nut shell …this new forum really blows…i hate computers in the first place and trying to learn how to navigate all over again is so frustrating…i wish they would just leave things alone…can’t get my avatar to work…won’t take any of my pictures…no more stars… so it’s gonna be a long time until i return to this site if ever…think 'ill just hang out at all the other railroad web sites…chuck
we need an…

so we dont have to hand type in the [censored] [censored] [ img][ /img] brackets !!!
I agree, my first complaint was all the threads with comments, questions, and complaints about the new site!
Other than been more ‘pretty’ to some, I find nothing particularly good about the ‘new and improved’ forums.
If they had more subjects for instance, [an O scale area, a scratchbuilding area, etc etc like other forums], If they had some decent easy to use AND UNDERSTAND instructions would have been nice.
Only thing for info I have seen is something written by some one who assumes you know stuff already, sheesh.
Way too many complaints from people who have lost links, photos, articles etc etc.
I don’t see many happy people here.
Again, except mostly those who get paid or endorsed by MR of course. They are happy.
It sucks but what the heck. It is free and it belongs to them so they can screw us any which way they dang well feel like and we have to take or leave and we have no say in the matter.
SNAFU as the military says
Just testing. [(-D] Yeah needs an image icon.
I must be typing incorrectly. There is no explanation in the FAQ, or am I so thick that I cannot find it?
[soapbox] And it would have been nice to see what the smilies look like before putting one in.
Bummer. I used to know how to post photos, but can’t hack it in the brave new world. Someone point out what I am doing wrong please.
The new forum is very good, free, and we can have a lot of great conversation while sharing our experiences on Model Railroading. I don’t want to complain about that.
We should start a thread and thank MR for the web page. After all, we did nothing to get it going except to register and use up time for free.
Be grateful that it works well with very little problems overall.
After you start your own forum, take complaints and fix them.
If we complain about everything that happens or about things we don’t like, there will no time for fun.
I might complain about the lack of time for fun.
You guys are right…I did come off as a little negative. Maybe we should start calling it “The Constructive Criticism and Technical Problems Thread”…
Hey Matthew,
I didn’t consider it negative. But if you want a new name then “New Forum Complaints and Compliments” would be shorter.
Why is it that you are the only one who has all those stars? Or did you put them in your avatar or whatever they call that thing. Hey I just looked that word up in my dictionary. What it says:
“(In Hindu Mythology) descent of a diety etc. to earth in bodily form.”
Guess that is what it used to mean before some geek hijacked it to mean a little picture near one’s name on the MR forum.[:P]
No complaints here, everything works well, and I think the Bergster and crew deserve a big thumbs up for a smooth transition.
Bergie and crew,
You did a great job. Could care less about stars, my only concern is the not showing number of pages at top and bottom and in a convenient spot. I used to like the line on each forum and topic of how many guests, members etc were on at the time. We will get used to the new format anyway. The reply/ quote could be confusing to someone new.
