One big problem is Gov Christie absolutely opposes any raising of one of lowest gas taxes in the country at 30¢ per gal. All of the surrounding states NY, PA, MA, CT & MD have a. 30¢ per gal gas tax. You get what you pay for.
No one’s gonna help the cries and pleads of gov Christie. The state of NJ is really suffering from the lack of money for its transportation and highway projects. It just keeps getting worse and worse. For some reason the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maryland are somehow getting and upgrading to better transportation. I thought New Jersey was the second wealthiest state in the U.S. and it’s failing somehow.
As a former New Jerseyan let me tell you these are the chickens coming home to roost that many predicted were coming a long time ago.
Too many years of fiscal irresponsibility, corruption, inefficiency, and administrations that kept kicking the can down the road for the next administrations to deal with.
Now the money’s running out, due to the above, but also a diminishing tax base due to an exodus of businesses and the most productive people. Business goes where it’s most welcome, the most productive people go where they can keep more of the money they earn. That’s what I and thousands of others have done.
Christie inherited this mess, but he did ask for the job. With a hostile party controlling the state assembly who won’t learn from past mistakes there’s just so much he can do.
Me? I bailed 27 years ago. I miss New Jersey, it’ll always be home, but there’s no way I’d move back.
The NJ voters would scream bloody murder over another tax increase, and there’s no guarantee it would go to road repair and upkeep and not into the general revenue.
At any rate, it’d only be a drop in the bucket as far as NJ’s budget shortfall is concerned.
Christie has raided the funds for public transportation to balance the budget. He is a low life of the worse sort. People keep harping about low taxes but you get what you pay. Sure you can move to Texas and pay no income tax but the sales tax is much higher and the services suck.
