I’ve made my move into the world of steam it’s not the latest BLI but it’s a good start.
Plenty of room in the tender for a sound decoder and comes with E-Z mate coupler.

I don’t know the history of bachmanns 2-6-0 but there spectrum line I think is a good value based line from witch to start Once you get a good quality sound decoder installed you probably will be looking at more and better models like BLI or LIFE LIKE.Good luck on converting this to dcc and sound.
It’s not from the spectrum range but for $100 NZ it’s not bad!
I’ve been running it on the dc function of the dcc controller and even on some of the dodgey places I’ve yet to fix on my layout it runs well.
The smoke function isn’t very realistic (toy train like) but there’s plenty of room up front for a LED headlight.
It’s a good loco when your on a budget.

I have the “sister” to this one, the 0-6-0, which by looking at your photo tells me is the same engine but with a set of pilot wheels. Not knowing the rate of exchange I can’t tell you if you got a good deal or not. These sell for $60 Canadian in the LHS or much cheaper through an American mail order company. However Shipping and Handling would cost more then the actual engine.
My Bachmann is a strong hauler but not a smooth runner.Another option you may want to consider is the Mehano/IHC line even at a few dollars extra you’re getting a good engine.
One problem I have encountered with the Bachmann is that the smoke generator will spew the oil out which will coat and dirty the track in no time. I also had to replace the shell as the smoke heater fell over and burnt a hole in the shell. Smoke generators will produce a lot of heat if running dry and some manufacturers warn against running dry. The Mehano 2-6-0 Camelback has an on/off switch for their smoke unit.
One thing I will say about the Bachmanns is that they are a robust hard to kill engine. What makes them good is that they are easy to repair.

I, too, have the 0-6-0 version and have noticed that the smoke generator just spews the fluid out, apparently because the heating element gets too hot by the time the locomotive has enough voltage for the motor to run.
Putting sound into this locomotive will be difficult because the sound system will have to go in the tender, and it does not have electrical pickup like the Spectrum line does. The loco will run without the tender because there is no electrical connection between them.
You’ll have to change the tender’s trucks to ones with electrical pickup wipers, and you’ll have to add wiring between the tender and locomotive to control the motor and headight. A challenge, but not impossible.

I thought I’d run some wiring from the Loco’s pic-ups to the tender and then back to the loco, should be 6 wires all up, which could be in round sheath, it mite look like a big hose?

If you run 6 wires in one sheath, it will be awful stiff. You might divide the wires into two groups and use a smaller sheath (heat-shrink tubing not shrunk), or gently twist them to form a bundle and leave them unsheathed. Depending upon whether you drape them low from engine to tender (like the water feeder lines) or hide them on the cab platform, the smaller bundles may not need to be sheathed or even colored black.

I also have a Bachmann 0-6-0. It’s a smooth runner, but not a very strong puller. That doesn’t matter though, as I use it as a switching engine. It’s also very quiet for a bachmann. I got mine for $40.00 US.
