Maybe this has been discussed and I missed it, but how do we all like the new version of the magazine? I personally liked the product reviews at the front, but aside from that it was all right. Very colorful.
a lot better than the first 2 i got. i know there will be stuff i’ll be using later. i really enjoyed skimming this one. still need to read it through.
I got the January issue a few days ago and was happy with the changes. I especially liked the way MODEL RAILROADER stands out across the top of the cover. A great magazine like MR should really stand out in a sea of magazines, kinda like Architectural Digest can be spotted an aisle away, LOL. I was disappointed with the retirement of Russ Larson, however. I feel like we’re losing a kind, respected giant in the industry.
The look of the magazine may have changed, but what’s important is that the content is as great & informative as always. I’ll also miss Russ but I have faith that he wouldn’t have retired without leaving very capable hands in charge of MR. Heres hoping for many more years for MR and all of us. Merry Christmas to all and stay safe out there.
I like it a lot. It has the look of a truley great mag.
Have yet to pick up a january issue, but I hope that I find the changes intersting. I do not always purchase a issue if their is no info in it that I want. $10 a month may not seem that much but times that by 12 months… too much for a 15 year old!!!

I think we will all miss Russ
Given the dramatic cover photo on the January cover, I would have preferred less clutter of words. If the purpose is to stand out from the pack on a newsstand my own view is fewer words are better

I don’t like the line graph used to display the data in reveiwing locomotives. I prefer the chart with writen numbers.
I finally picked up the January issue and liked what I saw. I was particularly overjoyed by the article about modeling a levee bridge–the prototype is a couple miles from my house, and I’ve been there and taken photographs of it plenty of times. It is different now from in the article–a second cut was made in the levee for a bicycle/jogging path over what used to be the Sacramento Northern mainline. While I’m sad that I never got to see the tracks that were there (I was missing from the railfan scene until this year, and there was a yard in that location until UP took over and ripped it all out, and gave the SN ROW to the city) but it’s nice being able to stroll along near the former WP mainline!
I’m modeling the other cut in the levee about a block away (the SN one, rather than the WP/UP one) so the article gave me some good ideas. The Altoona article was also provided some ideas for city modeling.
Although there were no articles that stood out for me this month, as always I found some good information. I like the layout of the cover.
I have been picking up MR on newstands reasonably regularly since ceasing subscription back in the eighties, and have just re-subscribed, so I have been a regular since the mid seventies. I am impressed with the January issue and think that it ranks with the best. Signalling article is really interesting, Tehachapi is fantastic, regular features re-stirred just fine. Thanks Russ for the good work to date, looking forward to todays team offerings in the future.
I liked the increased size of the product reviews. Other than that I found it a subpar effort for a 70 year celebratory issue. By far the best was the “Styrene to Streamliner” scratchbuilding article. The result was simply fantastic. Well done ***!! And not even in my scale.
