New Railfan Help (Fremont CA)

Hi, I’m a new railfan in the Fremont CA area, and I just got into the hobby in December. I’ve mostly been watching Capitol Corridor and BART trains and I’d like to start watching freight operations like Union Pacific. However I have no idea what trains go through Fremont and most importantly, when these trains come through my area. If anyone knows information about this it would be greatly appreciated!

First off - WELCOME.

Passenger operations operate on a timetable, and most are available to the public. Freight operations operate on company schedules which ARENOT available to the public, and may be changed on a moments notice - IN the COMPANY.

BA-Railfanning welcome to the forum.

If you’re trackside, seek out any other fans - they may provide some insight as to operational considerations. Local hobby shops and railroad clubs may be useful resources as well.

While freight operations aren’t on a schedule as such, they are often fairly consistent with their times.

Another resource is Virtual Railfan, it’s a network of live cameras at various rail locations around the country. They have a website and are also on youtube. I’m not super familiar with California but it’s likely one of their cams is on a line that also goes through Fremont which would give you an idea of when trains run

You could ask the people at the Niles Canyon Railway Museum,
https://www.ncry.org/ They should be able to give some info.
