I was thinking about acquiring the walthers New River Mining Company (HO scale) to center my mining operations on my layout… i had a couple of questions about it.
What is the footprint of the main building? How much size does it eat up?
What was the quality of the kit? Look good, build good?
Is there anything similar out on the market by any other companies I should take a look at?
I went out and measured mine the main build runs 9"x12 1/2" if it was a perfect rectangled shape.the truck loading tower building is 6 1/2"x 2 1/4". with a seperation of 5" or shorter for the conveyor shoot. The longer conveyour is 11 1/2" or shorter if needed.
My kit was very easy to build, no problems, and the parts where straight and fit nicely together.
Yes what is the Color of this Kit in Ho,Also what is a Good Color too Paint it.If I am Modeling the 1950’s-1960’s.I am running the ATSF SP what Railroad F7’s Shells shall I get that Ran Coal Trains fro my Coal Complex.Thank You For Viewung My Reply to this Post.
the kit is essentially a silver-gray… so you can sit it on your layout unpainted until you find time and it wont look THAT bad…
anyway… im in the process of painting mine now, im going with a grimey black roof, and im going to paint the sides a more dull grey/silver that is less shinny and plastic looking than the color of the kit… then im going to weather it…
I have been working on the Valley Cement Plant for the model rr group at Boothbay Railway Village. The 2 ‘metal’ buildings in that kit are similar to New River Mining. The first thing I do is look at the courrogated moldings to see if a line is there representing the height of the sheet metal of the building covering. If it is not there, I scribe horizontal lines scale 7’ apart, assuming the building is made if 4’x7’ corrogated sheets.
I assemble the building shell with no windows or other details, then airbrush the building with Floqil Old Silver. I cut a mask our of cardboard from an old cereal box making a rectangular hole scale 4’x7’. I use this as a spray mask for the individual sheets of metal. I like to use Floquil Roof Brown for rust. Setting the airbrush to a fine spray, I lightly spray the rust color throught the mask. Some ‘sheets’ have almost no paint, some I spray heavier with concentration of color at the bottom. Sometimes I spray a sheet with Model Master Silver to represent a sheet of metal that has been replaced. One or 2 on a large building make a contrast, although a mine building would tend more to rusty than new metal.
This may sound time consuming, but it goes quickly with an airbrush. I like the result
I’ve built this model. Do yourself a favor and buy some clamps sold under the name The Right Clamp. They hold your walls at 90 degree angles allowing you to glue them and hold them in place while the glue sets. I only use liquid styrene cement and it sets fairly quickly.
