new to hobby

I am new to the hobby and have been reading all I can about it before I buy a model. I somewhat understand about the different scales. I was given a HO scale Cat train set sometime ago. The HO scale is ok but I like the larger ones. Been looking at G scale model F-3B Caterpillar engine but unsure. Here is my question, is G and garden scale the same?

Thanks jugmaker

Yes, G is the ancronym for “Garden Scale.”

G Scale is a more difficult scale to understand. You’d be well advised to visit the Garden Railroading section of this site. In some sense, Garden Scale is G Scale. There is no official scale called Garden Scale. However, most Garden Railroaders use G Scale. G Scale is actually many different scales running on the same track. The scales range from 1:22.5 to about 1:32. The result is that the scale differences will represent guage differences. Remember that as the ratio becomes smaller (As in the second value becomes smaller), the effect is that the guage become narrower. I believe 1:22.5 is 3 foot guage. When considering G Scale, consider the costs and space. If G Scale fits the bill, go for it. G Scale really is the only scale suited to Garden Railroading for multiple reasons. Since HO was too small for you, consider S and O if you want to model indoors.

Thanks, I will check tne Garden trains.
