I have been a Train Geek for as long as I can remember. Surprisingly, (to myself anyway) I don’t have a single loco, boxcar, or even a piece of track in any scale. I don’t really want to start out with a basic 4x8 layout. I think I’d get bored with it relatively quickly and I don’t have the space for anything much bigger. I’d rather just join a club as far as that goes.
I love the heavily detailed loco’s I see in the pages of MR. I’ve even scoped out some of the really nice one’s on ebay (although expensive). I figure my “way” into the hobby is to learn how to paint, detail, and weather them as well as some that I’ve seen.
My question to you guys (gals) is this: Are there any websites devoted to this sort of thing? I’ve Google’d and searched but haven’t really found one that I really like. I’m sure there’s at least one out there and I haven’t come across it yet.
BTW, this is my first post. Hope to learn from all of you.
I stumbled upon this site yesterday, these are weathered, detailed, and under the usual price. http://www.railfanreading.com/Reading1.htm?layout/prototype/prototype.htm. In my opinion, I think it would be nice to have a 4x8, although, it would be nice to join a club, you’ll probably learn how to do your part in an operation session, create realistic scenery, and maybe, learn how to weather engines and cars!
First off, [#welcome] to the hobby. There are several great Weatherers here you should look at chatting up. Poke through the Weekend Photo Fun thread that should show up here soon. It’s a weekly thing we do on the weekends. I also reccomend the Elliot’s Trackside DIner. It’s a virtual place for us to talk and chat on anything. It;s not as directed as a specific thread on weathering, but many times we cover ne=ifty tricks on how to do things. Also lookfor a hobby shop near ya and get to know them. A good Hobby Shop wil know things about models and trains. And possibly have a good section on books. I suggest browsing that, see if any “How tos” grab ya
Clubs can be great places to learn at too, if you have one. But beware of drama, tsome club experts know they’re experts and won’t let ya forget how they do things. If you don’t like people, it may do you more harm than good.
Have you thought abou what scales you want to get into?
