A number of you have expressed a desire to build or bash a UK locomotive well at the risk of out lawing.
Get the UK Mag Garden Rail no 169 start page 20 this tells you how to bash a Bachmann spectrum no82097 Porter into a Dubs NZR A class loco, two locos for the price of one an NZ and a UK one all in the same loco [:)].
Be warned its a Vic type bash start with a perfectly good loco and throw most of it out[}:)][:P][B)]
Introducing John Robinson, builder of the Dubs A. Thanks for the interest in my lttle loco.
The Dubs A is built on a modified Bachmann Porter motor block/underframe with a scratch built styrene body.
It’s more or less to 1:24 scale. Biggest modification to the motor block/underframe was to reduce the width over the cylinders by 12mm, and moving the cylinders closer to the front wheel and on rake. If you can get hold of the Garden Rail article the construction pictures there explain this better. But here is one of the annotated pictures from the article. The underframe also was chopped around to get something closer to the true shape of the Dubs A’s underframe.
It’s a fairly small loco in real life, from memorary somewhere around 11T all up. Built in 1872/73 by Dubs & Co of Glasgow, Scotland. Thus the model is petite, and there is nothing fancy about the body construction, just a PVC pipe for a boiler, styrene sheet and strips for side tanks, cab etc, and sundry bits of brass strip and rod for fittings. Some parts of the Bachmann Porter were able to be reused, al be it with a bit of modifcation. Here is another picture from the said article showing the body before painting.
I should also add that this is not an original idea, I got the inspiration for my version from a si
