The first shot is one I’m hoping someone can help me out with. I took this April 7, 1977 at the Harrison PATH station of a Conrail passenger train behind two E8As. Now, as I recall, the Es didn’t go east of South Amboy at this time… only the GP40Ps were used on Newark bound trains. Anyone know what the story might have been with this train?
I commuted every work day in the 70s on the NJCL. Diesels did not go thru to NYC so that train was going to the staging yard around the bend from the Harrison train station to await the evening return rush hour. The Pennsy trains used mostly GG1s which ran from Penn station NYC to S. Amboy where they were taken off & diesels took them made the rest of the journey to Bay Head Jct. When the electric line was 1st extended to Matawan NJT changed the operation. Engine changing from electric to diesel @ S. Amboy was terminated & the electrics ran thru to Matawan where they terminated. Commuters going further south on the line would have to wait there for a deisel powered train which was coming directly from Newark to continue there journey further south
