newcastle pa.

I went there as a boy in the 60’s now i wonder what railroads ran through there? rambo1…

Rambo1:

The first question that needs to be answered is: Which New Castle, Pa. are we talking about?

The New Castle that is in Lawrence County ( NW Pa)?

Or the New Castle (Twp) in Schuykill County? (Eastern Pa)

Extra Point question: Have you seen Shikellamy’s profile?[swg]

I think it’s about 20 minutes north of pittsburg.

In Western Pennsylvania, any respectable town was served by either the Pennsylvania or the B&O Railroads. In the case of New Castle it was both.

New Castle was, and remains, a railroad town (CSX crew-change point, etc) with a great history. Too bad the town’s own website pays zilch attention to this fact and asset.

rambo, I hope this helps. I also hope several other guys here will enlighten you further.

Buffalo & Pittsburgh operates one train a day into and out of CSX’s yard at New Castle - generally occurs during the middle of the night so it is rarely pictured.

thanks alot guys . My dads cousin worked for amtrak and near his house was a main line . I remember belching smoke in the air they must have been alcos1 rambo1…

also nobody taught anything about trains then and took me track side. rambo1…

also here in toronto at school the cn line went by the school near the kodak plant for sure they were alcos the teacher would yell at me for daydreaming out the window all the time.hey all in the 60’s. I just thought I would throw this in. rambo1…

The Reading RR line from Sunbury to Williamsport used to cross the main stem of the Susquehanna River (below the confluence of its North and West Branches) on a long multi-span through-girder bridge about 1+ mile south of Shikellamy, and then run up the western bank of the West Branch right under Shikellemy’s Profile ! Unfortunately, that line was abandoned early in the ConRail days, the track removed in th early to mid-1980’s, and the bridge - including all abutments and piers in the River - shortly thereafter as it was a “close clearance” underpass obstacle for US Rt. 11 (“Susquehanna Trail”) on the west bank, and an obstacle to high-speed recreational boating in the River’s pool above the “inflatable dam” (“Sunbury Fabridam”) just south of the present US 61 bridge over the River.

New Castle Twp. is about 30 miles east-southeast from Shikellamy - it abuts the Borough of Frackville to the south, at about these Lat./ Long coords.: N 40.74410 W 76.23632

The Pittsburgh & Lake Erie paralleled the B&O thru the area in the 60s. The line N of town was abandoned after CSX took it over. Also, tit he Erie had a branch from Sharon to New Castle, but it was abandoned.
