BROOKVILLE, Pa. — The Brookville Equipment Corp. will supply five Liberty light rail vehicles to operate on Sound Transit’s 2.6-mile Tacoma Link extension. Brookville officials say in a news release that the streetcars will be eight feet wide…
standard TT width is also 102 inches. Now if you are ever in an accident with a TT and the sides bulge ask investigator to measure that width. Might get you some relief if more that 102 !
CTA’s rapid transit equipment has that outward bulge. They are eight feet wide at platform level and extend wider above that for extra seat room. This feature began with CRT articulateds 5001-5004 in 1947.
Street railway and most interurban cars were 8 to 8.5 feet wide to accomodate the narrow “devil strip” on many double track street railway lines. Since a streetcar can’t shift laterally as a bus can, having six inches less width may be desirable for ensuring clearnace.
