Freight car defect cards officially become obsoletePublished: January 25, 2011

CARY, N.C. — Defects in the nation’s freight car pool are now being successfully tracked electronically, officially making paper defect cards obsolete. The Association of American Railroads’ Railinc, which keeps tabs on all interchange service freight cars, announced today its Damaged and Defective Car Tracking system had been fully implemented.

All users of Railinc, which includes all the freight railroads, car owners, and repair shops, now enjoy access to the Web-based system. Previously, the standard way to denote a defect on a freight car was to tag it with a 3.5-by-8-inch paper card with a hand-scrawled description of the problem. The system had been in use for approximately 125 years.

Rail industry interchange and car hire rules now require all railroads, freight car owners, and repair shops to use the new system. Railinc says all industry users not part of the system should become compliant as quickly as possible.
