Nickel Plate Road Rolling Stock Question...

Hello everyone.

I was just wondering if anyone out there might be able to tell me if there’s any other NKP steam era rolling stock available other than the box cars made by MTL ?. I’ve been looking for a couple of months now but so far haven’t found anything.

Thanks.

Which scale? It really helps us to help you if you mention the scale you’re interested in.

Micro-Trains…N scale, right?

In N, the selection of NKP equipment sucks. Steamers and diesels are well-represented, and Con-Cor has a great line of semi-correct streamlined passenger cars. But cabooses and freight cars are another matter entirely.

Atlas has a partially correct NKP caboose, the NE-6. Good luck finding one these days. It’s the ONLY correct NKP caboose out there, and they never left Ohio. The NKP only ever had 75 of them anyway; the much more common (and appropriate for the entire history of the railroad) 1000-series cabooses have NEVER been made in N (I’ve had to scratchbuild mine, which is “interesting” in N scale).

Kadee (Micro-Trains, whatever) has made several NKP cars in the past, including 40 and 50 foot boxcars, flats, long gons, and twin hoppers (both steel and composite). The only one that’s currently available is the mill gon. Stay FAR away from the composite twin hopper: since the early 1970s they’ve painted it BROWN, and the NKP never owned a BROWN hopper (they were ALL always painted BLACK). Lots of NKP fans have complained to them repeatedly over the decades, but they don’t care.

Besides that, there’s squat-all. Athearn just came out with a LONG mill gon, and Roundhouse used to make their 36 foot box in NKP. Red Caboose has their 40’ flat and I think a 40’ box, but they’re long OOP. Intermountain has made several beautiful NKP 40 foot boxcars, but they sold out fast (as did the special run made for Des Plaines Hobbies). The also made the 40’ aluminum (silver colored) boxcar, but that’s strictly a passenger train piece of equipment.

Your best bet is

I’m sorry. I was half awake when I posted the question. I’m an N scaler.

In addition to the cars Ray mentioned, Kato has made NKP covered hoppers in N scale which should still be available.

Deluxe Innovations has made an earlier-prototype covered hopper in N scale and offered it in NKP paint, but its details are a little heavy by current standards.
