Nickle Silver vs brass

Im just starting out with a major layout but one thing is keeping me from starting. What kind of track should i use? Im mostly concerned about conductivity but appearance is another factor. Also Im concerned as to what a good brand for turnouts is that are affordable and usefull. Any other tips for a first timer would also be appreciated. thanks

Robert,
The kind of track you use should, first, provide the best operation. Nickle Silver! Next, appearance; Preweathered nickle silver! (unless you know of a source for steel rail). Turnouts; Of the commercial brands, I’d recommend PEKO, but ATLAS would do. again, nickle silver.

definetly, use NICKEL SILVER. Not only does it look realistic, but it has good conductivity. As for turnouts, I’d reccomend Atlas. As for the track, though, I don’t know of any manufactuers who still make brass. Also, I’ve heard that Steel is hard to solder. One suggestion: stay away from Atlas “SUPER-FLEX” track. It’s a pain in the ****!!!

a friend of mine uses “bachmann” nickel silver,
he hasn’t weathered it but the conductivity is great, they make an affordable variety of track.

Hi. Both have advantages. Brass is less costly. Nickle silver will not oxidize as fast.

I also recommend nickel silver rail because of the oxidation of the rail and the difficulty of finding stuff in either brass or steel anymore. You may have a store with plenty of brass snap switches, but ask to see number six switches and see what you get. If you are concerned about conductivity, (brass is better than nickel silver at first before it begins to oxodize) use more feeder wires under your layout. Good Luck - Ed
