NO ADVERTISING??????????????????

Then why the hell do we have to wade through the BS on every thread we view???

cf-7

They mean no advertising by members, not sponsers. The forum is free to members. The ads are a small price to pay. I can live with it.

[#ditto] to what Jeffrey said.

Plus you can use firefox with ad blocking if it really annoys you.

CF7: How much money do you think it takes to own Servers and employ professionals to keep this web site humming? Do you have any idea at all? Check it out, ask some IT people. Then maybe you will realize that what we have here is FREE…no cost to us to enjoy, is a good deal. I have absolutely no problem with Trains.com or MRR mag trying to keep this ship afloat by advertising.

Actually, I’m confused. The post said …“…wade trhough b.s, in every thread…”

So it’s not MR’s sponsers, it’s stuff members write. I don’t know what’s the deal. I guess some people name sources of parts and models… perhaps more explanation is needed…

Not sure what started this posting but I would like to add something if I may.

It would be nice if they added a members trading section. Like most of the folks here I have stuff I will never use again, but what I don’t want might be what you are looking for. I would rather trade than buy what I am looking for and still stuck with what I no longer want. I know, list it on E-bay.

What a Audiphile site I go to is they have a Uesd Gear section. Rules are you have to have 50 postings and Yea, Hi, Your Right stuff does not count, keeps the folks out that are just looking to sell stuff. Small fee for listing, think it is $10.00 for 3 listings per month. No more than 3 listing per month once again to keep for members only.

Side befit besides getting a good deal, you get it from someone that has a clue to the shap and what it is worth. Un like the idots on E-Bay that think a Athearn BB is worth $1800.00, remember that post?[:D] Plus you may make a friend as well.

Case in point, I bought a pair of Proto 2000 FA2 engines, 1 A and 1 B unit. Listed as DCC with sound. Asked seller if they had the decoder added or came that way? No idea. Asked if all the parts where there, answer he thought they where. Where both power, answer was "both are heavy? Turns out a friend went to the great round house in the sky and he was selling his stuff for the family.

Soon as I got them I knew there where problems. Decoder and speaker where added on, parts (grill for fans) where missing, B was a dumb and held the decoder and speaker box and the biggie, both plugs where female? Hum that won’t work.

I was lucky and he offred me my money back. I did keep the PK’s and with some work got them running last night for $4.00. His friend was a skilled MRR, just thought a little driffrent. They run like a champ now, neat lighting an

Garry, if you look after the initial posting here by the originator, you will see what he is talking about, there is a small line of advertisemenst. You can also se these on other subject threads…he doesn’t like those.

I don’t mind the advertising as long as it’s model railroading-related. But once I see a Cialis ad or that stupid “Calculate New Payment” annoying dancing guy it’s all over.

Cuda Ken:

Your point has been brought up on several other threads–I think MRR/Kalmbach wants to keep buyer/selling threads off this forum, which is okay by me. Having said that, when a loco comes up on e-bay that I have a question about(quality, reasonable price?, etc.) then I’ve posted a thread a few times since I’m a newb, and the feedback has been frequently critical to me in making a decsion whether to bid on a specific item. This has been allowed by the forum moderator(s)[Bergie, et.al.] and I think is a valuable asset on this forum. The idea has been that if you want to sell something, list it on e-bay.

Jim

As long as it’s train related and not a pop up or a browser hijack I don’t care. The alternative would probably be to give Kalmbach your credit card # and pay $4.95/month to be on the forum that would still probably have ads on it.

Do as they say, not as they do…

When I think of all that I’ve gotten out of these forums - the inspiration from looking at the work of truly gifted individuals, answers to numerous questions (often with 24 hours), opinions and review from people that I truly respect (I’ve probably saved at least a couple hundred dollars and countless hours of frustration) and tons of smiles and laughs - I think having advertisements here is indeed a small, very small price to pay.

[#ditto] Well said.

MR’s site does pretty well keeping the ads fairly low-key, but some web sites have turned into a virtual advertising junkyard, with all the busy animated ads. Worst of all are the ads that interrupt the flow – the in-your-face stuff that comes flying out while you are trying to link to some content.

Adertisers are finding banner ads on web sites are generally way less effective than you would think because people have learned to tune them out. I think turning your website into an advertising junk yard is a good way to just alienate people against your site.

Putting ads in between posts is getting kind of close to the line because it borders on being an in-your-face interruption. Putting the google text ads in that space works pretty well because text ads are the least in-your-face in nature. But if MR was to put an animated ad in that space between posts, then that’s going to be a bit much.

I know ad revenue helps pay for sites like this and I’m all for it, but there’s also a fine line where annoying ads actually can backfire. Customers matter and let’s not let the pursuit of the almighty dollar become so important that you just annoy your customers.

I really didn’t even notice the ads untill this post came. I found a couple useful things through them now that I know they are there.

I see you’re relatively new…IT ALSO SAYS NO SWEARING!!![censored]

And he swore how?

Because it’s a FREE Forum, duh.

If you don’t like it send a check to MR so they can pay for the banwidth that clowns like you suck-up here with stupid posts. Then they’ll go away.

Or maybe you should go back to that real popular MRR web site that has no advertising.

Let us know when you find it.
