No Day to Railfan Snow is Snowin' Wind is Blowin'

Wind is blowing about 20, Snow is Blowing mph, Windshield is -18 (+3F) Drifting snow now. Cold wind from NNW.

Have not heard any Trains since VERY early this morning (1-2AM). Approx MP226 on BNSF Transcon .

Looks like a good day to catch up on reading! (John Hankey’s Article in TRAINS is on the top of my list!

Love reading about the War of Northern Agression[}:)] Have a safe day everybody![tup]

Railfans is wimps. Railroaders are out there… if you are a “FAN” why ain’t you?

Right on, Sam!! Stay safe, warm, & dry. Thank goodness for reading and the internet.

Thanks, Nance!

That is exactly my plan. I was not trying to rub in my situation on the original post. Just wanted to emphasize that it is so windy, and visibuility is a mile or less right now, it would seem even the BNSF is not willing to risk a blown over train. And I am sure their weather reporting capabilities are better than any of us have access to. Just the weather estimates on the Radio and TV are not very encouraging for this to blow through quickly.

Just head a Westbound blowing through town heading for Wellington. Not moving very fast though. (11AM) here.

Semper Vaporo: Your right, but I spent too many yerars and miles fighting the snow and ice up in the Northeast. I Do NOT enjoy being out in this bad ice and snow. So the ability to enjoy it from the inside looking out is a pleasure of sorts. I truly feel for those who must get out in it to work or railfan. God Bless 'em.

.

Any way< I was just wanted to see how many others were enjoying this big bad weather event, It seems to be headed North, (Chicagoland, etc)and then Northeast on the weather maps. I would bet that it will effect railroading as it moves through those other parts of the country. Folks up there better have their Carhartts close by![sigh]

The blizzard is a God send to northern Michigan. It I sucking up all the energy. This is the first sunny day in three weeks. It has snowed every day until today in the Traverse City area.

We’ll get some wind and maybe 3" of snow. Were I to remain in the area…I’d be out with camera(s) working. Besides…one of the last bigger snowstorms we had, I got the opportunity to assist a very cold and tired conductor. Saved him about two miles of walking, then while they were waiting to get clearance to move I brought 'em a quick hot meal.

There has not been anything on the Transcon since I do not know When they stopp them in KC or something.

Wow!! That’s neat! You were both in the right place at the right time on that one! Stay safe out there.

At 3PM

I have only heard about three Trains, all seemed to be Westbound. Snow is blowing pretty heavily. Can’t see the Transcon a quarter mile away. No scanner, but they might be holding Eastbounds in Yard at Wellington.

Stay Warm!

have been out in bad weather before.helped a conductor get breakfast for him and his engineer when the train ahead was stuck in the yard.

stay safe

Joe

Snow started at 1245 here in NW Indiana. Havent heard much at all on the CSX in/out of Chicago. L156 just called a signal. We should have some drifted roads and tracks by morning.

Yesterday was tough for them. Derailment of one car at Wellsboro and then a sliding wheel on another train, which had to be set out. Everything came to a halt.

Got the scanner on and ready for action tonight.

Joe…things moving over your way?

Ed

Ed, I heard that there’s no South Shore east of Michigan City (forgot whether that’s right now or tomorrow’s plans).

Metra’s getting hit now–delays of some trains by a half-hour or so, and it sounds like some trains are operating load-and-go. The worst of the rush hour is probably behind them already, because Chicago cleared out early (perhaps not early enough!).

Not holding out hopes for productive work sessions at Proviso…just hope they stay safe (which includes not getting frostbitten).

Ed

looks like maybe 324 is finishing the turn at deshler.have an eastbound coming to garrett.A westbound is coming out of willard and and there is another train going westbound(north) on the C&O in fostoria. This is what I am reading per ATCS.We are getting sleet now in nw ohio.

stay safe

Nothing out here since about 3PM, one Westbound. Snow has let up, and you can see the Transcon now.

Still blowing some snow (ABOUT 20-300 MPH){Make that 20-30MPH- [ I fat fingered the keyboard.[oops]] Light Drifting around about a foot or less. Wind out of NNW.

YUP YUP! I live around Perrysburg OH next to the CSX B&O main and it is rocking nasty here. It is 12:30am and the CSX RL dispatcher just called he has four trains tied up waiting to come out of pemmberville into the CSX walbridage yard. But union street is tied down with frozen switches snow’d in track. Stanley is crwaling and the trains past my house are few and far between right now. There are like a number MOW workers calling back and forth with the CSX wabrdg yard master and train master vying for space work space and trying to keep up with incoming orders and trains!!! O man wish I had a Hummer right now… CSX is snow’d in bad right now. Not sure but NS is probably having the same problems out here around toledo. I am sure there yards and east west track are in bad shape… I have tree limbs down my home of a soldier sign is blown down and it is knee deep out front!!! O WELL I AM getting my gear and heading out into the blizzard… get my tripod and cameras and video camera… wish me luck I am out the door cant stand waiting!!! INDEPENDENTRAILFAN… the mask is off tonight for a skimask! LOL god bless all

MP 226 on BNSF Transcon ( El Dorado to Wellington, Ks.)

Wednesday, 5AM Weather here has gotten pretty cold(+ 1F). No snow, but the wind is blowing about 20mph. Windshield is -20 F

heard Two Westbounds last night about 0230am and about 3 Am. Seemed like their speed was much reduced [2c]

My guess is that they are holding all the Eastbounds til conditions improve in the Destination areas (Chicago, Ohio and points North East).

Stay Warm,

Gee–in the Windy City the gusts only got up to 70! Some drifts on expressway ramps exceed four feet.
