As absentminded as I am sometimes, I will probably be trying to access the MR’s website and then realize that it will be down.[D)]
Hah! You too? [%-)] I can guarantee you that I will be trying to access the Forum sometime Friday night and think my computer’s crashed, LOL!
But seriously, folks, I’ll be out in the California Basement doing the annual spring cleaning, whatever wiring problems might have or not cropped up (so far, none), and replacing the scenery around a new passenger station I bought for Sierra City.
ALSO—with hope, I will be trying to figure out how to mount a Micromark mini camera–that should be here tomorrow, assuming UPS hasn’t lied to me–on a flat car so that I can make a little ‘cab-ride’ trip around the Yuba River Sub and hopefully have it up either on YouTube or Photobucket by Monday, so that I can see what I’ve done and what I still have to do from a REAL trackside perspective.

I’ll be on other sites and experimenting with my new camera. i am surprised by the rookie implementation of the site maintenance or whatever. I’ve never seen a professionally run switch or update of any kind take more than a couple of hours. Might be time to fire the cook and find a better one, especially when you consider the size of this site.
I have to work this weekend anyway. Bummer because with the forum offline I could go finish the additional benchwork I started last weekend.

Even if the forums weren’t gonna be down, I’d have no time anyway!
Tomorrow I have to help my friends get set up for their (twins) sweet sixteen, then we have a lax game.
Saturday, lax practice. Then I’m going to a college lacrosse tournament, the Big City Classic. Then I have my friends’ sweet 16 that night.
Sunday, mass, homework, and then a Confirmation retreat for the entire afternoon.
So I have three days of spring break left, and not a minute of it to myself! [sigh]
This week is my son’s spring break. Last weekend we drove 400 miles to visit various hobby shops in the state. We hiked 5 miles Tuesday, and did 8 today. Tomorrow I have a Pumps and Emergency Vehicle Driving refresher class for the local FD. I think I am going to get reacquainted with my recliner and at least 1 pitcher of ice tea for the weekend. Just don’t see much happening with the train for the next week or so. Then again, we have a little girl (and her parents) coming over Saturday night and I have bought a Thomas the Tank Engine just for her. I suspect it will get some running time .
Luckily there is a TRAIN SHOW SUNDAY!!! Clean the trainroom, work in the yard and yes, like a couple others, I’m sure I will attempt to see if I can get in the forums.
I really don’t know.
Its been such a long time…
since I’ve seen…
the sun.
…will I be alright…???
A weekend without “my” MR forum? A complete disaster! I am just kidding, but I am going to miss my daily visit to this place and my chat with the friends I have made through this forum.
Knowing myself, I will start to check in on Saturday, just to see whether we are back to work… [:)]
Work on my resume, try to get the lawnmower running (it quit last fall) and maybe get some work done on the new spur.
I will be checking Friday night to see if the site is up and running!

It does sound like they are redoing the entire site, not just the forums. However, as an IT professional myself, I agree - they should have another server that isn’t publicaly accessible where everythign can be thoroughly tested, and once it’s good, going ‘live’ with that on the public servers shouldn’t take more than an hour or so. We do tend to think of Kalmbach as “huge giant corporation” but really they aren’t all that huge, so I can sort of see the lack of a complete ‘proper’ 3-part environment of development servers, test servers, and production servers.
Odds are the upgrade WILL only take a few hours - the “whole weekend” thing is to make sure time is allowed in case things do go wrong. But even then, backup backup backup - if the new stuff isn’t working in a short time, punt, restore the backup, and plan for another weekend. I’ve been doing this for a long time, and it’s amazing how few clients, large and small businesses alike, fail to grasp some of these basic concepts. So I’m not really surprised. I’ve seen it happen as clients that are much more important than a free hobby forum - like banks.

Oh, in that case, then I’ll spend my whole weekend clicking on the link every few minutes and saying, “Is it up yet? Is it up yet?” [(-D]
There’s a train show / club open house on Sunday. I might take that in.
These days with VmWare (or VirtualBox if you wanna go cheap) that isn’t much of an excuse. Its incredibly easy to use one of these (or another) virtualization platforms to setup up virtual “containers” in which to work. Then you can do what you need to inside the virtual machines (containers) and switch the IP’s when you’re ready to go live. It also has huge benefits for backing things up-- just back up the whole container, moving things around-- need a bigger host? Just move the container. Adding disk space? Just allocate more (or less, if you don’t need so much).
Same here, and I was thinking just exactly the same thing.
I really hate springtime. I get taken away from my trains and have to do yardwork or Mrs.Boss Lady won’t let up on her nagging until I do. [B)] Now that the forum is down looks like there’s gonna be double duty in the yard this weekend. Thanks a lot! Perfect timing Kalmbach! …(Then again, Bluegrass by the Tracks is this weekend at the Houston Railroad Museum so just maybe… [:-^] …) chuck
Or maybe they’ve scheduled this to coincide with electrical or AC upgrades to the facilities. That kind of stuff does take a long time, and you can’t just switch over from one system to another.
Updated plans: I just read in this mornings paper that there is a train show about 45 minutes away tomorrow. Looks like I’ll be taking a road trip.

Much ado about nothing. I belong to about twenty mrr forums. Plus a Google search will produce many useful links.

I’ll be doing what I’m usually doing during my daylight enhanced free time!
“ain’t no mountain high enough”
Nice modeling. Is the sky added digitally? [(-D]

EASY THERE BATMAN, lol. It hasn’t been that long, next year for sure the Leafs will make the playoffs. You know what’s funny? They play great in the preseason with the “kids”, struggle all season and then get rid of all the old guys and the last month of the season become one of the hottest teams in the NHL playing the “kids”. I already have my Canucks hat purchased, lol. If the twins play like they did last night the Canucks will be unstoppable. [dinner]
