The usual no parking signs are not very helpful in NYC. The local signs are more complex to deal with a set of rules to keep the roadside free for cleaning, trash collection, snow plows etc.
Is there somewhere a good source to get tiny images of some NYC no parking signs and make models of?
Shouldn’t this be under the “I saw something I don’t understand” thread? [:D][:D][:D]
.
I have visted New York City several times, and I always find at least one "No Parking sign that needs to be photographed. How can anyone figure some of these out? There is an episode of Futurama where they dig up an antique NO PARKING sign from Old New York, but no one can decipher its meaning.
Thanks for the kind offers. I got one from Google street view and put it in EXCEL and sized it down. There is in fact not much to read on that small image but it is still different from the standard ones sold. That is good enough for the intended purpose.
In general the No Parking signs in NYC aren’t that bad to understand, and have improved over the decades. The extreme examples of signage gaggles you see via Google images are there…because they are extreme examples.
Still two or more signs on a pole are not uncommon in dense commercial areas, but not that common in less dense areas like much of Eastern Queens or many areas of Staten Island.
I agree. Most signs are not that bad at all but it is a big differenece if you see asign, think about it and understand it well or if you are passing by in your rented car in a foreign city the guy behind you honks the horn when you slow down and you must decide within 2 seconds to park or not. I had sometimes a hard time.
I am looking for non parking signs around the Third Ave in the Bronx for my layout. No problem to find nice ones with street view.
I was just wondering if someone made already a nice collection.
The fire hydrant story is “funny” too. They are black (dark gray) with a dirty silver cab (somehow hidden). Usual +/- 15 ft no parking zone but no yellow line at the curb. All my fire hydrants are red. Ordered a new set to paint them black/siver.
Staten Island is easier because we do not have alternate side of street parking (for those unfamiliar with NYC these are times when you cannot park on a street side so the street can be swept). As a resuit our signs look more conventional then those in other boroughs.
