Nobody watching from the back?

Shouldn’t there be someone on or near the back of the cut of cars with a radio to the Locomotive Engineer? Maybe he is holding the camera.

You have to protect the leading end of movement. That was the rear of the movement. So, no, someone isn’t always watching the rear.

Who just happened to be standing there filming this at this particular time?

I was thinking that as well.
Seems kind of odd to film a cut of cars pulled into a building

Most railfans try to get the power in the video, even if not the focus of the footage, maybe it was there, just not in the footage posted

May just be a worker having a smoke when they saw the boxcar derail.

That’s definitely a possibility, pulled out his phone and started recording pretty quickly, good reflexes and reaction, many would have just stared open mouthed as it happened, then said “I wish I had recorded that “

Remember the condition of track inside customer facilities is the responsibility of the customer. Keep the track in a condition that can cause a derailment - the customer pays the price.

I had a late friend who was on the ground and his radio failed and couldn’t stop the engineer from backing too far into a building.

Several reasonable hypotheses for this incident.

Looks like there were at least two cars involved.
Were they being pulled in or had they been shoved in and were coasting when we saw them?
As to the question about why someone happened to be recording, maybe he wanted to show the poor condition of the track.
