Not so blinding a light

Anybody out there have an AF/Gilbert S scale 466 PA Comet all of a sudden stop going in both directions? Mine was having trouble going backwards and making a weird arcing noise but it was more like one of the drive wheels were bouncing on initial reverse direct switching.Yes, the relay works fine, the single drive motor works fine and when I play with the 2 screws at the very top of the motor attachment bracket which push down on the field coil laminations…The train will struggle to go backwards but it is like a worm gear is slipping rear bad. When I reverse direction…It will go forward OK…I went into the two end gear boxes and the armature drive shaft has a nice smooth rounded tip but the other end is like all rough around the ends and flattened on the end but no loose foreign material floating around or in the worm gearing or gear box on either end. It’s weird that the motor reverses but something in the gear drive is slipping but I don’t see the problem…Help me please! I lost…Thanks.
