Ok now I need some help I am now out of topic starters and face it I was never real good at starting new topics. Anyway if you long time train form writers have some tips I would be more then greatful.
I have a tip: Don’t put 40 of our smilies in a row, side by side, by side, by side… it stretches the entire page to the right so everyone has to scroll over to read the page. [I’ll edit your post to fix that problem.]
See, you already created a new discussion. See how easy that was?
[}:)] Sorry, I know, I’m being a little sarcastic tonight.
You could ask people if they are going on a train watching trip during the long weekend.
Or where did everyone get their forum name.
Or do we need another choice on the smile list ?
When you are train watching - look at everything! Engines, couplers, tracks, cars, people - everything. There is always a question waiting to be asked. And when you look at pictures, check for things you don’t understand. Then ask. Read the forum postings carefully. There is always something in them that begs to be asked.
And always - ask people something about themselves. Nothing too personal, just general things. Keep it light and always maintain a sense of humor. This always gives the forum grumps something to gripe about! Ergo - more fertile ground!
Don’t be afraid to ask “why do they do that?” I would recommend that you try a search of the forums for your topic (just in case someone else asked the same question recently), but that doesn’t mean you can’t ask the question from your perspective, or add your comments to another thread.
As others have suggested, share your experiences. Your take on a given event will be different from mine, and may cause me to share my point of view as well.
And use the smilies sparingly. Too much of anything can get distracting.
But please do so in a level headed manner. Shouting (using all caps) something like “WOULD RAILROADS TODAY STILL BE RUNNING ON IRON RAIL IF THE ROBBER BARON STEEL MAKERS HADN’T WHATEVER?” is inflamatory and will engender a flame war.
Don’t worry so much about starting topics. If you look at my profile, you’ll notice that I’ve started only a few threads but I’ve made a fair number of postings on a lot of different threads. If I find the thread to be interesting, I’ll make a posting to voice my opinion or contribute my knowledge.
Begin your thread with,“I know this may already have been discussed,” and then blab about Amtrak funding.
But you’ve already started this thread and it will probably become entertaing.
Hi Railfan69 I read your responce about me being out of topic starters and it was pretty good to answer your question.
I live In Milwaukee Wisconsin on. The south side right by the Up tracks that cross though west allis. And the last train I saw was about 1week ago but it was at 4:30 in the morning so I really could not see it well. The train before that one was 2or3weeks ago.But I was so far back in traffic I could nor really see the train execpt that it was a really long one…
railfan69: Does a train only come through about once a week? or do you only get a chance to see them once a week? I’ve never been to Milwaukee, (and can barely spell it) Whose rails were they before the UP came in? Perhaps Milwaukee Road?
as long as you’re talking about the smiley faces, have you and your staff considered updating those icons. Perhaps adding some colored railroad signals. A red, yellow and green, separately or some other railroad symbols?
