About two days ago I heard on NPR how LA Ports have banned trucks older then 1989 from the their port. Hispanics were divided because on one hand the particalate polution ws preety bad in there “hoods” but on the other hand owner operators who are mostly hispanic complained that there trucks that they own cant work anymore.
It would seem that the shipping compaines are dumping too many containers at LA when we have wide open ports like Oakland and Prince Rupert and Tacoma avalible
If you had been reading what RWM and a couple of other have been posting about intermodal, then you would know that Oakland, Tacoma and Prince Rupert do not have the logistics infrastructure present in the L.A. area.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the ban become even stricter in a few years.
It is by 2013 all trucks that go INTO California PEROID or run into that state must be 2010 compliant. All locomotives must be Tier 2 or better also. The CARB board is going to run alot of companies out of business and may also end up killing the agriculture industry in the state also for the simple reason that truckers are about to revolt now over their idiotic regulations it can be 100 degrees outside YET you have to sit with your engine off and bake in an aluminum oven AKA your truck right now since they refuse to let APU’s run also.
That tells me the freight rates dont pay enough to support new equiptment. In fact that 1989 year cutoff reminds me that electronic engines were just starting to come on line in that year. It seems that naturally breathing desiels are intended to be totally removed from any work is what they want.
If these folks had to buy 2008 model tractors to stay in compliance, they would not make enough money anywhere in the place to do any meaningful work.
I say that California should just totally ban trucking inside thier borders and see how they like it… tis a shame because that great state relies so much on it for thier daily bread.
Hate to tell you this but I get my info from drivers that go INTO the State of California. Also the link you posted is for the OLD 2005 no idle law. The new one that went into effect on Jan 1 out there gives 5 mins and that is it. Also on th APU’s out there if you have a older truck that is older than 2008 spec then you can run it till 2013 then you can no longer run in the state of CA PEROID if you have a new reg truck the only APU that CARB even allows is made by Cummins and costs over 25K for it. A normal APU is 8K INSTALLED the one that is CARB certified is 25K PLUS INSTALLATION. Volvo and Mack are trying to get their 2008 specs certified to be able to idle under the regs and made it however they had to lean them out so much and load up the EGR’s and Catalityic convertors on them so much that those trucks are getting 4 MPG.
If CARB does not pull its Head Out of Its Butt there is going to be a HUGE problem in 5 years Trucks now produce 98% less NOX CO2 and particulates than they did 20 years ago yet the CARB board wants them to reduce then 90% over what they are now. Yet they refuse to do anything about the ships that are coming into the harbors that are burning diesel fuel that if it was put into a 2008 spec motor would cause that engine to fail just from the sulphor levels alone.
My drivers alot of them are INDEPENDANT Onwer Operators and more of them are Company OWNERS. I am friends with alot of owners of Companies or the VP of Operations aka the people that have to deal with what CA is pushing onto them. Earl Henderson Trucking I am personal friends with the owner and VP of Opers and the Head of Personal and they are all telling me the same thing that by 2013 you must be running a 2010 engine on your reefer unit and tractors and if you are running a APU it must be CARB certified. There is not going to be an extension on any of these regs they are proposing. Also the heads of Florilli and Marten are telling me the same things. I will take the word of people that combined run over 2500 trucks and 4000 trailers all over the US. Of the Independants they are telling me the same things and alot of them are saying come 2013 they will not run CA for ANY amount of money which means CA can kiss its economy BYE BYE when you consider that 80% of the OTR trucking industry is fleets smaller than 20 units.
I interpret this to mean that all vehicles not older than a certain age can operate until 2017 and that’s it.
Plowing through exemptions pretty much leaves out everything related to California’s local trucking and harvest.
Everyone else gets the shaft. One puff of smoke from the stack after a certain year causes that truck to be considered in violation.
I agree with Ed and support the assumption that California is going to have to find another way to get the freight out. No trucker or company in right mind will put one wheel across that border with California.
In fact, Im horrified at some of these limitations. Im damn glad I got out of that line of work as just about every other load went into or OUT of california in my time.
This all seems like an excercise in futility on the part of LA. With a region that size, and ports and freeways such as they have, as well as being in a bowl, you might as well have tried to clean up Pittsburgh during the '40s. This is why, despite their extreme restrictions on smoking, they still have the highest rate of lung cancer in the country.
Maybe they could move the whole thing up on top of a mountain in Colorado. How could that be done and what would it cost?[C):-)]
The money is easy on that mountain. It’s teh drivers that count when it comes to western driving. You dont send greenhorns fresh out of school straight to Colorado. Unless it’s a local born and bred.
NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Leave the enviro-loonies and enviro-nazis in California. At least that way the rest of us know where they are, and can avoid them. Just like any other pest, if you move them at least a few will escape and contaminate a wider area.
Seriously, I actually hope it gets to the point where no trucks will go into California. When the people who are too busy making a living, raising their kids (in other words, leading normal lives) get hungry, they will wake up and throw the loons out. There is hope - gas prices are almost high enough that regular people will run over the BANANA’s and NIMBY’s who don’t want offshore drilling.
The loons have already escaped. A few years ago some transplants tried to get a 40 year old clay pot factory in Custer, South Dakota, a town of less than 2000 shut down permanently. It was the town’s largest employer. The only thing they could whine about was dust.
If they push that through then they can kiss the Port of Oakland LA and Long Beach BYE BYE. Every container and everyother kind of trade ship will bypass the State of CA for Seatlle and Portland and all the ports in Mexico that are being built right now.
If you try to legislate the impossible, the disastrous possible WILL happen.
I wonder what would happen to the mega-pollution-island cities if somebody pushed through legislation that foodstuffs could only be shipped a maximum of 100 miles. Sin City, for one, would become a ghost town overnight. (Since I live here, I am NOT pushing this idea, but some Greenies might…)
These are the same people that will not allow the USA to build anymore Nuclear plants yet they are the ones that scream we do not have enough power to run all their electirc do dads and their Tanning beds.
