I was at the NRE shops for the second time last week, on the Wedsneday. Sitting in the NRE shops are the BNSF GP38-3’s that NRE is rebuilding for BNSF. The sure look sharp in the new H5. (H3 is on Wid Cabs, H4 is on in shop repaints that retains Green, H5 is the H1 version that is black, not green)
The following units on the property was 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2027, 2031, 2040. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=367546 This is a photo of 2031
Actually H1,H2,H3,H4,H5 refers to paint schemes.
No green at all? Is it black, orange and yellow?
I don’t know where the heck you got H5 but the engine I see is wearing H4. There is no difference between this NRE rebuilt GP38-2 and a repaint done at CEECO or Mid America Car. The only difference with this engine and the regular repaints is the huge yellow stripe on the frame and that’s not a big enough change to declare it a new paint scheme.
Also, the order was for 40 rebuilt GP38-2’s which would receive numbers 2000-2039, where did 2040 come from?
H4 is Green/Yellow/Orange with Swoosh
H5 is Black/Yellow/Orange with swoosh
Whatever the heck it is, 2040 I dont care. The unit lokks pretty sharp. It does look like Heritage 5 however. Joe Green what are you talking about.
BNSFKLINE seems to be right. Do you not like bnsfkline or something???
Cool looking locomotive . Ok, can KLINE post a picture of all these different paint schemes? H1 is the Green/orange/yellow scheme correct. Then H2 was the one on most of the Dash 9’s, H3 was what? And ive never seen (although im sure there is) a green/orange/yellow with the swoosh.
Alec
Perhaps I am mistaken but I thought I already saw this scheme on a repainted SD40-2 at Eola Terminal about three months ago.
Eolafan…that is an H4. Green/Yellow/Orange with Swoosh. These NRE rebuilds are the first in the H5
Umm, your wrong. Ive seen 2 “H5’s” in black.

And ive seen the 6888 is black also.
Alec
All the swoosh’s are in black.
I though when repainted, they were painted green/yellow/black? I guess I was wrong.
bangs head against wall, im cornfuzzled
H3 is for all safety cabs and H4 is for all standard cab units, which is what that GP38-2 is. I’ve said this before, H3 is the old Heritage 2 paint scheme updated to wear the new swoosh logo in place of the cigar band and yellow “BNSF” lettering on the long hood. H4 is the old Heritage 1 updated to wear the new logo on the nose and the sides instead of the BNSF herald and lettering. Also the new paint scheme now wears black where green formerly was…therefor no H5!!!
Are any of these actually official names for the paint schemes…? Or are these all names applied by railfans? [%-)]
Heritage and Heritage 2 are official paint scheme names, however the newest scheme hasn’t received an official name.
I think the lines dipping down on the nose doesnt work with the swoosh. I think It would look better straight across. It makes it look too classic but it has nothing else to substantiate it as it did with that round thing they had on the front.
Looks a little tacky with the RV air conditioners on the top of the cab.
I do actually like the Dual AC’s on the Unit looks like a Motor Home.
