NS-Semi in NC

My son advises me that he just came across an accident where a Norfolk Southern train has slammed into a semi at a grade crossing north of Greensboro, NC. If anyone has any details, it would be appreciated.

Here’s the scoop:

Truck driver escapes path of oncoming train

GREENSBORO — The driver of a truck that was hit by a train this morning jumped from the vehicle just before impact, according to police.

Just before 10 a.m., an eastbound Norfolk Southern freight train traveling just under 40 mph crashed into a railroad maintenance truck at the South Elm Street crossing, according to Greensboro police.

There were no injuries, but the truck was destroyed, police said.

The railroad crossing remained closed indefinitely.

Greensboro police Capt. Mike Oates said the truck driver believed the train was meant to switch tracks before the crossing. But he jumped from the truck when he realized a head-on collision was imminent, according to Oates.

The train smashed into the truck, pushing it 40 yards down the track before coming to a rest.

Police did not immediately release the names of the truck driver and the train conductor.

Both declined to comment.
