Hi,
can me anybody say the classifation of the NYC no.1863(F7A) and no.3503(F3A).

i think the nyc used a system classification code that went something like this.
1st character = power type like, d for diesel e for electric
2nd character = builder like, e for emd a for alco b for baldwin etc.
3rd character = type of service like, s for switcher f for freight p for passenger
4th and/or 5 th = horsepower in hundreds
others following would denote sub classes within that power rating
so - def15 would mean diesel, emd, freight, 1500 hp das12 would mean diesel, alco, switcher, 1200 hp.
this model number was often stencilled in small characters somewhere on the locomotive, often under the road number.
i do not have complete knowledge on this subject, but you get the idea. i bet some of the nychs types out there could explain it better and with more accuracy than i can.
