NYC Passenger Cars

Does any company offer the types/year of passenger cars you would typically see an E unit or a PA pull? What types of cars would those have been?

The new Walthers 64 passenger coach is a welcome model, and the common NYC Coach of the 50s and 60s. It’s number 932-6792, view it at:

Branchline’s single window NYC heavyweight coach is also accurate, although they were being phased out during the late 50s.

Terry Thompson wrote a near article about modeling NYC trains and it’s in the articles section of the MR website. I’ll have to retreive it later.

Enjoy modeling the Great Steel Fleet!

The Athearn 72’ streamlined coaches do a creditable job in NYC. Athearn also had/has a ‘shorty’ RPO that was actually prototypical. Be warned though. Finding NYC rolling stock in the BB kits is increasingly hard to do. I’m thinking of converting some ATSF streamlined coaches into NYC rolling stock. Just have to add a lot of undercarrige detail.

Just to give you something to reference to check out the below link. Hope it helps!!

Hmmmmmmm.

The streamlined Walther’s 85 ft. Budd cars are available in New York Central and would be appropriate behind E units, PAs, and GP7s post WWII. The streamlined 85ft. Rivorossi cars in the gray scheme would also be appropriate. For years New York Central passenger trains had gray streamlined Pullman Standard cars mixed in with Budd streamliners. On trains like the Henry Hudson, heavyweight coaches were mixed in as well.

By the way… A must have book for New York Central. Shows up on Ebay from time to time. Rails Along the Hudson Has a lot of beautiful shots of NYC passenger trains. You’ll see the mixes of cars.

Hope this helps.

Depending upon how accurate you want cars to be see the NYC Historical Group/Yahoo group. These guys will respond and probably tell you when a given car went through the car washer machine(dates and times). The detail these guys get into is unbelieveable.

He does a good job of developing a credible, rather than rivet accurate, NYC passenger train. This was written before the Walthers PS coach came out, so says little about it. This happens sometimes when you knock yourself out doing a close enough model…

Also I’d suggest you review the Official Guide to the Railways for the period in question, as that will give you information about the kinds of cars in the trains consist – diners, sleepers, coaches especially. Has good schedule information too.

Photos of the trains in action are great indicators of what was in them. One of my favorites is Michigan Central Trackside from Morning Sun. Of course, this covers the area I model, and also provides plenty of consist information.

There are the ICC accident reports if the train you are interested in modeling was involved in a reportable wreck. Just Google “ICC accident reports” and go the official DOT library site if you want to fish for these.

Once a Central fan, always a Central fan!
