O scale 4-4-0, 2-6-0 or 4-6-0?

Does anyone make an O scale small steam locomotive such as a mogul, 4-4-0 or 4-6-0? Kits, brass, plastic? Particularly something that could be made into a V&T engine. I have seen the old Rivarossi 4-4-0 but I am hoping to find something a bit more modern. Thanks - Nevin

Anyone?

Unfortunately, all the old line O scale locomotive kit manufacturers (Lobaugh, All-Nathion, Central Locomotive Works) no longer make steam locomotive kits. The first two are out of business and Central Locomotive Works only does diesels.

The major 3 rail outfits (MTH, Weaver, K-line, Sunset and I think Lionel) do make 2 rail versions of their locomotives. MTH is coming out with a 4-4-0, but it won’t do you much good since it’s a model of NYC #999. http://tinyurl.com/c8352

Rivarossi did both an original and modernized version of the V&T 4-4-0, but I have no idea how easy they are to find. They also did a 4-6-0 based on the Illinois Central engine made famous by Casey Jones. Again, I have no idea how plentiful they are.

All-Nation did a kit for a B&O 4-6-0 at one time, but it was a more modern engine than would be appropriate for the V&T.

I don’t know how important O scale is to you, but you’d have much better luck in HO. V&T 4-4-0 (early and modernized), 4-6-0 (# 25, 26, 27) and 2-6-0 have all been done in brass.

If you’re willing to do On30, Bachmann has a 2-6-0, an upcoming 2-8-0 and BLI has a sound equipped model of a D&RGW C-16 2-8-0. Instead of V&T, you could do the Carson and Colorado (later SP narrow gauge) that connected with the V&T. You’d have to do some bashing, but the new Spectrum 2-8-0 looks like it could be easily detailed to resemble SP #18. Wouldn’t surprise me if someone did one of the SP 4-6-0’s in the future.

'Fraid I’m not much help.

Babbitt?
Don’t they still do the kits and have the parts?

I used to get stuff from him.

As a matter of fact:

MTH came out with a 4-6-0 modeled after a Pennsy engine

Precision Scale intends to build O scale models of the V&T Reno and Genoa. BTW, the V&T’s most modern 4-4-0 was built in 1875. And their newest 2-6-0 was built only one year later. The term “modern” takes on a whole new connotation when applied to the V&T.

And mainly revolves around the replacement of link and pin couplers with knuckle couplers, not to mention the upgrade to air brakes. Oh yeah, there was also the conversion to oil fuel and electric headlights.

IIRC, the V&T was still using stub switches when it folded in 1950.

SMR trains is making a brass General(Civil War version, not what it looks like now) available in both 2 and 3 rail versions. It’s an absolutely beautiful model that sells for around $1000. They also offer matching rolling stock.

By modern, I meant the model locomotive design, not the prototype. I would be more than happy with a big stacked wood burning, link and pin 4-4-0. If precision Scale is making one, any idea when it might be made? - Nevin

It’s 7 years from your asking the question, but there’s a company now producing an O scale General and some other 19th Century locos as of 2012. SMRtrains.com It’s 1:48 scale and state of the art. Good luck.

B.T.S. now has the Babbit locomotives - old All Nation line I think, but has not got them in production.

They are working on a Civil War 4-4-0 kit.

Good luck

Nevin hasn’t been too active on these forums recently, but he decided to model in HO, and concentrate on the Tonopah area. Then his house was right over the epicenter of an earthquake…
