Obama Administration sends transportation bill to Congress
Wonder how much, if any, of the $5B Amtrak’ll get.
Hopefully, congress won’t block this and Amtrak and the Rail system at large can get the money.
Unfortunately, there many members of congress that don’t understand the value of passenger train. Perhaps those individuals are supported by the Koch Brothers.
There are a lot of Trojan horses in this bill. One section says that DOT bureaucrats will be allowed to enter car dealerships to verify CAFE standards. Previously this wasn’t allowed. Knowing this administration, there are probably a lot more unnecessary regulation increases in this bill. And the name- the “Grow America Act”? Really? It’s a transportation bill. That name is a complete non sequitur. I hope it dies in committee.
This bill is so important for Rail, Highway etc…good for our country and New York State, New York City transit and all the meto in the area around and in the city.
It’s probably DOA. Congress and particularly the Republicans, aren’t going to give the POTUS anything he wants, despite the needs of the nation.
How about a review of last year’s transportation act?
I’m afraid you’re right, Lawrence. There are a lot of passenger train haters in Congress besides their hatred towards our President. Paul Ryan’s draconian budget calls for zero funding for Amtrak.
But Congress WILL block this. The Teabaggers simply will not allow it to pass and that’s all there is to it.

Stupid as stupid does when the facts bear out the the Tea Party is not power to stop any of this. The Tea Party is not the bad boogieman that is being presented here. They are far from it.The group of Americans does not have a leader and comes from every walk of like.THe are what Jefferson met when he began the Declaration of Independence with WE THE PEOPLE.So please stop blaming our fellow citizens calling them these rotten idiotic names that certainly do no & never will apply to them.Where is the money coming for all this spending? We are in debt to the tune of 17-18 trillion dollars and the liberals in DC want to spend more without staying with budget like you & I have to.
This sounds like a comprehensive plan spending more money that we don’t have and in the end, Amtrak will receive a minimal amount to keep it on life support until 2016 when it will be somebody else’s problem.
Mr. Perry obviously just woke up from a nap that has lasted over 5 years. The baggers will block this like they blocked help for vets, the jobless, hungry children , the elderly so on and so forth.
How is the “$302 Billion, four-year” funding bill (ostensibly) being paid for? The federal gas tax of 18.3 cents generates approximately $18-19B/year in federal transportation revenues. I’ve seen varying estimates of total annual federal transportation revenues, but I seem to recall that it is less than $50B/year. Thus there would be a considerable federal funding shortfall in the unlikely event this proposal becomes law.
So, the ideology of the specifics in the package aside (roads/transit/Amtrak/etc.), unless the Obama Administration has unearthed a new “pot of gold”, where is the money going to come from to fund this package?
Suppose the Teabaggers cut all funding for the airline industry and guess what; Your cheap airline tickets will skyrocket astronomically. All you Tea Party lovers are going for their heads. What’s wrong with leveling the playing field?
I too, am getting a little tired of the bashing of Tea Party supporters and Republicans as a gut reflex. Government spending is so far out of control its tragic. I agree we need infasructure spending, but we have to decide what gets cut to pay for it. We can’t just infinitely raise taxes or increase the debt.
