Odd CP EMD Unit

Saw an odd CP unit today in Chicago while returning home from the city on the North Central Service route. It was freshly painted and looked a lot like a GP-38, with two radiator fans atop the hood, but had flared radiators like the Tier 2 SD-70s. Could this be one of the new 710ECO units?

4500 series was rebuilt from a GP40X unit.

There are several of these. They were originally model GP40X, of UP heritage, and were rebuilt, probably by NRE, to GP38 equivalents. The GP40X hood was retained. CP acquired them in 2005. I have only seen one, the 4522, but I assume the sisters are the same.

The 4520 series is mostly former UP GP40X’s, although two others started out as GP38’s. I’ve seen them in transfer service at Landers and a few other locations. Incidentally, the 4500 series is ex-MILW GP38-2’s.

Yeah, I didn’t mean to confine the numbering that tightly. I knew the rebuilds were numbered above the ex- MILWs. What I didn’t remember is if they started with 4520 or 4521. There was a former GP50 in the batch too, but that one was destroyed in a wreck.
