OEM for Athearn's HO 20,900 gallon tank car

Hi,

Can anyone tell me who the prototype car builder would be for Athearn’s new HO scale 20,900 gallon GS tank car? I looked on their website and they do not say and I did a google search and that also came up empty.

Regards,

Rod

It says RTC, which if I remember correctly stands for Richmond Tankcar Company. It seems like they were affiliated with, or bought out by, Union Tankcar Company.

Is this a RTR version of the Model Die Casting kits? Looks the same.

Rod,Says Athearn-

  • Fully assembled and ready for your layout
  • Richmond Tank Car prototype
  • Photo-etched platforms
  • Factory installed wire grab irons
  • Weighted for optimal performance
  • Machined RP25 profile metal wheels
  • Equipped with McHenry AAR upper/lower shelf couplers per prototype practice

Richmond Tank Car prototype The second line says it all.

Well obviously I completely missed the “Richmond Tank Car” part, I saw “RTC”, but I actually thought that had something to do with “Ready To Run”. Oh well!

To the person with the question about whether this was a RTR version of the MDC kit, no it is not, this is all new tooling.

Speaking of the MDC 50’ modern tank car, MDC made this as a shorty, 50’ and Tank Train version. The prototype Tank Train cars were made by GATC, would GATC also have made the shorty and 50’ versions of the MDC car or was the MDC car actually modeled on a different prototype and MDC just lettered some of them for Tank Train and added the Tank Train style of walkways?

So, the OEM of the RTR is RTC, not MRC?

The OEM for the Athearn RTR 20,900 gallon tank is RTC.

The MDC cars were generic models, they were not models of any particular prototype.

Thanks for the reply Eric.
