Advertising a new George Clooney movie?
OFOX is a reporting mark for Residco, Inc, I seem to remember this company as a small-time buyer of unwanted fleets, but they may have changed from that. Do you have a number off one of those cars?
Carl, I think I’ve seen a train of those recently here in Boone. I only noticed because of the reporting marks. It was only once and may have been one of those detour coal trains that normally go via Marysville/Kansas City.
Jeff
Its a train of almost 100 cars, been in town since Wednesday. It may not be for local delivery but might be on its way to Bow, NH. Will try to get a number or two tomorrow or Monday. Wondering who owns the cars and where originated.
If these cars are open top hoppers painted black with one yellow end, they each have four pairs of dump doors, the initials “OFOX” look like they’re freshly applied, and the first three car numbers are “500,” then they’re probably ex CHTT (Chicago Heights Terminal Transfer) coal buckets built by the U.P. Albina (Ore.) Shops circa 1981.
There may be about 100 cars in that OFOX 500200-500699 series. From their specs, they aren’t very large cars, as modern hoppers go, even from the 1981 era.
Here’s a handy site to bookmark for all questions about railroad reporting marks:
Thanks, Cacole, I’ve booked marked the site…all you others, thanks, too, for the information. They are older, open top hoppers. The reporting marks are on the upperleft facing the side of the car and are larger than normal markings with the OF on left side of the rib and OX on the right. I think our idendification is complete as to owner. Now to who is using them, between where and where?
