I need to mount a couple of my tortoises off-center due to the position of a joist. The basic instructions say you can use the side holes in the fulcrum but that you need to change the geometry of the wire and to send away for some special set of instructions on this. Rather than wait on snail-mail, can someone explain what to do here? Thanks.
Brad
Is the joist running perpendicular or parallel to the track?
Brad. I had a similar situation on my layout. The solution is to use a extension bar connected to the turnout. In otherwords, using a steel wire of the appropriate size and length, bend one end of it at a 90 degree angle and insert into turnout throw bar. Take the straight section as far as need be (left or right) over the 1/4 hole at the new location of your machine. Mark the wire (c/l of hole) and bend it down another 90 degrees to form an inverted Z shape. Measure, cut, and install this remaining length of wire to fit the machine. You my want to slot the 1/4 hole to provide more lateral movement. Finally cover the hole with a small shed or bu***o hide from view. Note: if you use either a Homosote or a foam base, you can cut a small channel to place the wire below the layout surface or better yet, run it through a soda straw so you can bury it out of sight.
Bob.
Edit:
Forgot to mention: You can purchase piano wire to match the one that comes with the tortoise at most hobby shops. Especially the ones that deal with RC planes and such. These wires come in 3’ length so you should have enough to do several turnouts.
