I was in Canada on vacation in 1967.They were celabrating thier centenial that year. For those of you from Rio Linda, that means Canada was established in 1867.Happy Canada day to those of you north of the 49th parallel.[:)]
We Americans often celebrate the birth of our nation by blowing up a small part of it. Do you guys do the fireworks thing? For some reason, I always do the beer first and the fireworks second… which doesn’t always lead to the most responsible decisions.[;)]
Thanks for the good wishes Dave. Yes, fireworks and beer both figure in our Canada Day celebrations. Our local celebrations today included beer as well as burgers and hotdogs at the street stalls in the what we call the village, and soft drinks of course. At 10:00 this evening the island of Montreal rocked with the roll of fireworks thunder as the individual communities tried to outdo each other with fireworks displays. Serious decisions were postponed.
That “strange flag” - Canada’s national symbol, the Maple Leaf flag, became Canada’s official flag on 15 February 1965. It replaced the Canadian Red Ensign, which included the British Union Jack in the left upper corner and had the Canadian coat of arms in the main field. The Red Ensign however continues to survive in Canada in two versions- the provincial flags of Ontario and Manitoba are Red Ensigns, with their provincial coats of arms in the main field.
Alert readers will probably realize that Dave Model Works was pulling our collective Canadian legs - we’re good at that too.
Canada owes its exsistance to the railroad. Provences wouldnt join confederation without a rail link. I was going to post a complete canadian railroad history, but I decided to just have my one quote.
I had a great day celebrating Canada’s 140th birthday yesterday. I spent the day visiting family, went to a Canada Day car show, drank a few Molson Canadian’s by the pool and then finished it off watching fireworks.
Late but with good intent. Happy Canada Day ! Being a hockey fan I know the words to your National Anthem as well as the US Anthem. And can a good canadian fill me in on Pillar Salami. I buy it in Buffalo NY when I’m there. Man does that company know Salami.
Here I am a day late. Congrats. I spent last Canada(oops ran out of A’s) Day in Summerland. OH!! The girls floating the canal at Penticton. Oh yeah, and the model RR in the Lake boat ,Sicamouse. Gotta run the bookstore in Monroe,WA this 4th though.
This is off topic, but on the subject of beer…Canadian, as it happens. My boss invited the office with spouses to his place for a pre-Christmas party. It was to be a blind taste-testing session since many of us made our own wine and beer. To keep this short, partway through the tasting of the beer, our host mentioned that one of the entries was the commercial Black Label and that he couldn’t stand the stuff. He’d pick it out blindfolded, no problem.
