Hey Al, what am I looking at?

Canada is the second largest country on this planet, and it features an inordinate amount of empty space.

Canada used to be that way, but if you look carefully at Al’s post you will see that it has collapsed into an area about 1/8 of an inch square. Needless to say that change will make getting around the country much easier. Needless to say rail passenger advocates have jumped on the oppurtunity to promote cheap electrified high speed rail service between all the population centers of the country.

[V] A tragic example of the lack of WYSIWYG. I had the Uniden home page with line drawings of some of their offerings at the top and the quoted material in a block below. Showed up great in Preview mode, then became an event horizon upon posting. Perhaps on these boards we should speak of WYSIWIG = What You See Is What Is Gone. Just for the He11 of it I’ll try to “purify” it through word and then paste again. If you don’t see it, it stil didn’t work! [sigh]

Uniden is now shipping Scanners and CB’s to Canada!!

I have never heard of this rule. I remember asking an RCMP officer a long time ago if scanners were legal, and my answer was as long as it isn’t used to help aid a crime. Honestly, around here, everyone has them, albeit, maybe not handhelds. I have two, and I know another guy who has one (we are both firefighters) They do come in handy sometimes. I personally don’t think you’d have a problem with them, unlesss you started being near a lot of crime, or showing up at fires or something.

Jeaton: Just where is all this electrified hi-speed inter-city train travel, news to me, between populated areas, we don’t have any populated areas, everything is 800 km. away here, that’s why we all have 2 cars and pay $1.33/l for gasoline. We sort of have a train service that runs a couple of times a week with 50 year old passenger cars but I think it takes a week or so to cross the country. I guess you could take a scanner on the train if you wanted, at least you would know if the train is quarantined or not.

You know, Al, that’s a real interesting winter shot of CP’s ex KCS SD40’s, but what has it got to do with scanner’s? [(-D]

OK, let’s get back on track here! I have owned a hand held scanner here in rural Ontario for 23 years and taken it across Canada on passenger trains several times. It came in very handy on the train as advance warning of meets so that I could get to a Dutch Door (remember them?) for Photos, and also learn why we were stopping in the middle of no-where etc.

Scanners are legal in Canada. You may listen to anything you want but two conditions apply to information monitored on frequencies other than general broadcast. You may not use it for personal gain or criminal activity; you may not divulge it (tell someone else)! That means you can’t tell your buddy that #1 is meeting #2 at location XYZ, but hope that he heard it also.

My hand held scanner travelled everywhere with me, including trips to USA, until all the local rails lines were ripped up and there was nothing interesting left to listen to. With today’s gas prices I can’t afford to get it out anymore and chase trains.

Dave

Dave, thank you for setting me straight. It’s good to know.

And welcome to the Forums! [#welcome] [#welcome]. Don’t be a stranger! - a.s.

Some states (like my state of Minnesota) require you to register for a “license” to own a scanner, but it’s only a one-time thing and costs a few bucks. I guess they figure if you know that the gov’t knows you own one, you won’t use it for nefarious purposes.

Not in Iowa - I confirmed that with one of the public relations officers for the State Patrol just a few weeks ago. They have no restrictions on carrying/using a scanner in your vehicle. That sounds about par-for-the-course with the Minnesota State legislature.

I am no expert, but as far as I know one-way scanners have never been illegal in Canada. This new “now shipping to the great white north thing” may just be a new development in the shipping dept at Uniden. There are lots of people with scanners here, and yes they like to listen in.

Well, bully for Uniden if they can introduce more price competition into the market (I’m not implying there isn’t enough competition in Canada; I just don’t know).

It does behoove to be very aware of what page of the online Uniden Company Store a person is on. At least here in Chicago USA, a page will sometimes quote a price for a “reconditioned” model – even if they are out of the new ones! Caveat emptor! - a. s.
