Old Branch Line in Winston-Salem, NC

There is an old single track branch line and one which, looking from its condition, is seldom used that runs just to the east of US 158 (S Stratford Road) in Winston-Salem, NC, between I-40 and I-40 Business. Apparently it is still an active line judging from the well maintained grade crossings at each of the many streets that cross it.

It’s not entirely clear to me where this line originates or terminates or if sections of the original line are now torn up.

Can anyone provide any information on the history and current use, if any, of this line?

What is its name?

What was the original railroad that established it?

Who owns it now?

Where does it begin and end?

What current traffic utilizes it? How frequently?

Any information would be appreciated, including any link to a railroad historical society in Winston-Salem.

NS ownes it now. Southern used to, If I am thinking correctly. If we are talking of the same tracks, it runs up to King. I figured it goes to RJR. Which one of the plants is just south of King. Not 100 percent sure though where it originates. It may be part of the line that runs parallel with 158/Stratford rd. That line also served Sara Lee bakery. One portion serves Poindexter Lumber Co. They have frieghts once or twice a month. Maybe this helps?!?!?!

I can’t reminber the line name

Would it be part of the “Winston-Salem Southbound”?

The old branch line is known as the Tar Branch. It branches off from the W-SS main line and runs down to Old Salem and ends just under I-40. The Southbound had freight warehouses along with their General Offices there too. The Tar Branch was also used to haul concrete for the construction of I-40 All of the tracks are now gone or have been torn out and paved over.
