Old Lionel Trains

My grandpa had a very old Lionel train set that has very little information on it concerning what model it is. Since he passed away, we are trying to figure out what is worth keeping. We have one that is very old, probably from the 40’s or 50’s. I took some pictures of it to help anyone try to figure it out. Any help is welcome, whether it is telling me what type it is or helping me to find out on my own. I appreciate any help you can give.

Here are the pictures:

I posted a this reply on the model railroader forum and in case you don’t see it, pasted it here:

The set is from 1964. It has been cobbled. The set origionally came with a 3309 turbo missle launcher which is missing. The silver tank car did not come with the set. Nor did the silver hopper which is not a 60’s era Lionel piece. Track was packed with the set where one of the cars is sitting. According to Greenburg, the set would be worth $300 in like new, complete condition but that’s because the missle car, which is missing adds a substancial premium to the set. To a collector, my guess is the set would be worth $75 for the engine and set box. The cars have little collector value.

Ok. Thank you very much, I have been trying to find out for a long time now. It has been used, abused and stored for a long time so I don’t doubt its missing a few things. Thank you.

Most old sets are worth more for sentimental value than for cash. If there is any history behind the set I would consider keeping it and setting it up at Christmas. If you do that make sure that the transformer is in good shape (flexible cord, not frayed). A local Lionel club would probably help you for free. Also, ask around. You might find a train buff that can make sure it is in good working order (again free). Or you can take it to a hobby shop for assistance (perhaps not free unless you purchase something).

Yes, it is really not worth selling at all, plus it is sentimental. So I will be keeping it. I may consider getting it fixed up though. Thanks for your help!
