I had posted a help me I need info on a R.I. TA train and its pass.car set. And got a reply from one called R.T. POTEET, He suggested 2 possabilities one was RMC April 1963! Thats as old as I am! Went to RMC web site to check on back issues and they only go back to 1970 and not all issues. So I started to poke around the net and to my amazement I had found not 1 but 2 places that had a copy of RMC April 1963, reasonably priced! And many many more even older issues I think one was a MR from the 40s! They also had the other book R.T. suggested it was $95.00 But my funds are limited, so I only got the mag. Looks like a good place to look for hard to find books /mags, might help others. The site is called - AbeBooks.com - take a look! Hundreds of book dealers Thousands & Thousands of books. Thanks R.T. The May 1980 issue of Model Railroader also had an article and drawings of the TA and train. At the bottom of the Trains.com pages are links for their magazine stores. It (or copies) are available there.

Thanks Jeff for the info, need all I can get, I wanna try my hand at building one in O Guage.
When I see a reference to an article in an issue of MR or RMC that I do not have (I have MR solid back to 1950, spotty coverage before then, and a rather mixed collection of RMCs) I write the issue down on a slip of paper that I keep in my wallet. It is amazing how often at train shows, swap meets, or even ordinary non-train rummage sales I can pick up an issue from my “want list,” often for as little as twenty five cents an issue, even for very old issues. Rarely do I pay as much as a dollar.
The moral of the story is, don’t lose heart because the Trains.com index shows an article that looks perfect but seems “too old.” The old issues are all out there, somewhere.

General advice on back issues:
Anyone may order photocopies of articles and drawing features from out-of-print back issues of “Model Railroader” and other Kalmbach Publishing Co. magazines by clicking on the “shop” buttom above or by e-mail to customerservice@kalmbach.com. (Back issues still in print are also available under the “shop” button.)
NMRA members may order photocopies of articles and drawing features from any magazine in the collection of the NMRA’s Kalmbach Library (named for MR founder A.C. Kalmbach, but not affiliated with Kalmbach Publishing Co.). See the Web site at www.nmra.org/library.
Railpub, a back-issue dealer that advertises on the MR Web site, can often supply complete back issues of out-of-print model railroad magazines. See the list on the Railpub Web site, www.railpub.com.
Good hunting,
Andy
www.railpub.com has everything.

One Track Mind in Arkansas has a few back issues. I managed to purchase a few 50’s and 60’s MR from him. He may have the 63 RMC or a few others from the steadily dwindling pile.
It is my hope that eventually all of the issues that ever was published will be in digital form and freely availible (Or subscription) online as PDF’s
Greetings,
Try Route of the Rockets, Rock Island in the Streamlined Era by Greg Stout, published by White River Productions. If you don’t want to drop the bucks try an inter library loan. It has the interior layouts of the cars for the three car and four car sets. It has pictures of the TA’s plus pictures and names of the cars. Don’t forget the Rock Island Technical Society. Pics of TA’s and various cars come up on Ebay regularly, I look usually every Tuesday and then on Friday or Saturday.
Hope this helps,
Bob
Although all of Andy’s advice is good, I’ve done hundreds of dollars of business with Railpub, buying individual issues of MR and RMC to fill out my collection—and to save wear and tear on my bound volumes of MR when taking the Paper Time Machine back to the wonderful '50s. I also corrected an error I made when I did the most intelligent thing of my 50-odd year modeling career by buying the 1950 through 1961 aforementioned bound volumes. Y’see, I was just a callow youth and although MR offered 1947 through '58 (at $6.50 each!) when I first started ordering them, I thought “What value could be obtained from those old ‘Blacksmith Days?’”—and bought only the '50s volumes.
If you’re as avid as I was (and am), you might want to go to www.railpub.com and order the issues you need and want.
Has Model Railroader ever thought of offering back issues on DVD? I know other magazines do this and it is a reasonable way for many of us to keep our collections this way.
