I was on Metra today out of Joliet and noticed a lot of business with rail sidings and freight cars . My question is what railroad handles this switching ? Anybody have ansewer ?
Iowa Interstate – trackage rights on METRA from Blue Island to Joliet, trackage rights on CSX from Joliet to Bureau, its own rails beyond.

Iowa -Interstate now owns the line from Utica Illinois west.Since this past fall.
IIRC, the trackage the Iowa Interstate now operates east of Bureau to Utica is leased from CSX. Chicago Rail Link provides the local freight service on the exRI Metra lines.

Chicago RailLink is a shortline on the southeast side of Chicago which I believe handles the deliveries.
Does Iowa Interstate handle local deliveries? I was under the impression they didnt. Iowa Interstate runs their daily train into Blue Island, but I dont think they handle the local stuff. Subject to correction.

Chicago Rail Link’s map shows they go as far west as Mokena. In addition their map also shows them going to and beyond Ashland Ave Yard and even to Western Ave Yard.
A while back I saw an IAIS unit and what looked to be open hopper cars…(ballast cars?) sitting on a siding near LaGrange Rd and I-80. There’s either a small quarry and/or a redi-mix plant along the tracks near that intersection.
IAIS serves Ozinga at Mokena, delivering sand that is loaded at Chillicothe, Illinois on the Peoria Branch.
