I am wondering if anyone has ever tried running this small Bachmann ON30 040 Side Rod locomotive through a HO Scale bridge. I can’t seem to find out the actual width of this loco for clearances on the sides. Any thoughts on this subject ? Thanks
I have no experience with that particular model, but most On30 locomotives will NOT go through an HO scale bridge or tunnel portal.

It must be remembered that On30 is essentially O scale. It happens to run on narrow gauge track, in this case HO track or special made On30 track that is more consistant with O guage.
SO, you must think of everything in terms of O guage, NOT HO.
Buildings should be O guage structures to be in proper size to the On30 equipment, NOT HO scale buildings or bridges or tunnel portals, or what have you.
SOME On30 locos/RR cars might be smaller in stature compared to general O guage locos/RR cars, but that still would not mean they would fit HO equipment. SOme narrow guage lifesize 1:1 were smaller in size compared to regular 1:1 equipment, but they were still basically regular sized, not miniatures.
I have one of those locos somewhere, but I can’t find it right now. It is very small. My guess is that it would easily clear HO bridges, etc.
You can go to BachmannTrains.com and ask for the dimensions in the “Ask the Bach Man” forum. He is always willing to help.
The gas mechanical is is 1- 9/16" wide by around 3" long.
Why is it so hard to answer someones question? He is NOT asking about anything but a bridge. As we all know different items can be used for different scales/gauges.
Catt gave the dimensions, so now all the OP has to do is measure to see if it will fit. I don’t think the OP needs the long story about how anything O scale will not fit anything HO scale.
This kind of stuff frustrates me…
Personally, I have dabbled in On30 for around 10 years now. I have found that a lot of HO will work with On30, including bridges. I have to agree with Harry - my guess is it will fit.

To all those who took part in this discussion… I want to say that the Bachmann Side Rod locomotive in On30 works just fine on crossing over HO scale bridges. No problems with clearance at all. Don’t know until you try sometimes. Thanks again.
