Other railroad jobs....

Engineers get all the glory, and most of those working for the railroad that populate this board are engineers/conductors, but for those of us that don’t want the time away from home, what about the other railroad jobs?

Specifically, I’m looking at police officer for NS when the position opens in my area. Anyone here who holds that position for any of the railroads? Or know anyone who does? What about NS in general, what type of company is it to work for? I think I have the experience where I’d have a fairly high chance of getting the job if I went for it, but am not sure what the job entails? Is it like normal police work (arrests, investigations, patrol), or are you more service oriented (like a security guard)?

Anyone know what the job is like?

rail road bulls have full police power on rail road proporty…they carry side arms also… they investigate…and arest people…its not your normal run of the mill rent-a-cop security guard type stuff

I realize railroad police are full-fledged police with powers of arrest, etc… I guess my main question is how much policing is there actually to do? It doesn’t seem like it’d be the hub of activity, but what do I know? And what about NS in general?

they patroll the yards… anytime their is an issue with tresspassess…they investigate…they also do potroll the rigth of ways…drive along them …and if they see you tresspassing…your busted…and NS is nasty on tresspassers…they will hall your *** away in a heart beat if they get you…at least they do around here…
i guess what you need to do is contact the NS police force and ask them what they do if you want to know the whole story behind the job

I know up in Chicago you’d be busy patrolling all the Intermodal trains. You’d also look out for anything suspicious about the trailer/containers on the train like open doors, etc. The thieves in Chicago are very good at stealing quite a bit of stuff while the train is moving at 10mph. I’ve heard stories of some using shot guns to blow out the air hoses and then just loot the train!!! I’m sure your best chance of being a railroad cop is working a big city where there is obviously more scum bags to deal with, good luck!!!

anyone else?
