P2K 0-6-0

WOW!!

I just got my first P2K 0-6-0 and I’m very happy to see that all the raving and great comments were more than justified. This has really got to be the very best running engine I’ve ever seen.

Maybe with all the success of these engines for Life Like they may do a revised 1942-44 version with the long sand domes and air pump on the pilot deck.

Thanks LL!!

Roger

Roger–glad you like it, it looks extremely handsome from all the photos I’ve seen. However, how does it pull? I’ve got 2 P2K’s–an 0-8-0 and a 2-8-8-2 and though they’re very smooth running, their pulling capacity leaves a lot to be desired. I can’t get the 0-8-0 to move more than about 5 or 6 cars in my yard, and the 2-8-8-2 needs a helper if I’m going to be pulling a train of anything more than 15 cars on the main. I’ve also heard some very negative comments about the new P2K Berkshire’s pulling power, so I’m curious as to whether or not this seems to be common with all P2K steam.
Just curious. But that 0-6-0 is certainly a handsome little devil, isn’t it?

Tom,

I sure wish I could tell you about the pulling ability of this little beauty but my layout, so far, consists of just a partial yard. I can only pull 7 cars in the area I have. No grades but #4 code 83 turnouts and sharp curves. I’m happy with it as is and it will do well in this yard. I may get another for the other end of the line when I get that far.

Roger

Tom, I can move seven or even eight weighted cars along the flats, but any grade over 0.5%, and she just spins. I love my BLI J1e, but that little feller makes me beam!

Congratulations, Roger. When you have the stomach for it, it will take a light weathering and look sssssssssssssssseeeeeewwwwww kkkkeeeewwwwwwwlllll.

My only disappointment with the P2K 0-6-0 is it’s pulling power - less than 10 cars on level track. I have never been successful in removing the cab to see if more weight could be placed into the boiler - I would settle for 12 cars at this point. Even a switcher needs to be able to move a reaonably sized train in a level yard. My P2K 2-8-8-2 doesn’t pull that well considering it’s size so I suspect that all their steam is a little wimpy in tractive effort.

I own a LL 0-6-0 it pulls the Roundhouse Overton cars (5 total) really well. Or switches a few cars around.

The P2k 2-8-8-2 I own has the ability to move 24 loaded walthers ore cars with loads and steel wheels up a 7 foot 3.5% curving grade with some slipping or a 3% without much effort. But it is obvious that LL is a bit light in the pulling dept.

There is always the mighty BLI PRR J1 that I can hitch on for those long trains.

I can get this item decorated for CNR in Toronto for around C$225 plus the taxes; how much did you guys pay for it? I find this a lot of dollars and I want to be sure it is a worthwhile deal. From reading the CN Lines articles it is not far off prototypes. Thank you all.

Mine was bought last week on ebay for $99.95!! The ebay Buy It Now Prices seem to be in the $124-160 range. High but still better than full retail.

Roger

I got mine from modeltrains.ca for Cdn$170, but it is undec. I think they are asking too much.
