I have been waiting for the Roundhouse NYC 4-6-2 but they might not show up. Been waiting for sometime.
I want one for NYC and will take an undecorated one and have a friend decorate it for me. He is really good at this.
I see Model Power has one, the older Mantua line I think. I just looked at the Model Power site but not sure if the undecorated one would suit being a NYC version.
Cannot afford brass so that is out of the question.
I do not want old stock as some of the older genesis I believe were cracking gears.
I will put in my own LokSound decoder and speaker.
The Model Power one is an updated version of the old Mantua pacific from the fifties. It has a can motor and is DCC ready, but isn’t as detailed as later models from BLI or Spectrum etc. IIRC it’s based on a USRA Heavy Pacific so it’s not exactly like the NYC one - but then the Roundhouse one isn’t either.
I have found a Bowser 4-6-2 kit and older Genesis 4-6-2. Not sure I want to try building the complete Bowser kit though. They do look nice with all the details.
I also found an older Genesis 4-6-2 but waiting to hear from the on line company as there was not photo.
I guess if it is close enough, I will have to be satisfied with that. I am not into intense rivet counting.
The model is quite dated, but it makes a very nice runner. It does look pretty good as is once it’s painted, but some extra super-details can make it into a much better looking model. I have one from the final run, which I reviewed here: http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/p/92434/1085063.aspx
I received an email yesterday from Athearn’s mailout news saying that they have abandoned the project to update the Genesis 4-6-2 and bring it into the Roundhouse line. So it seems that you would be best served in looking for an alternative…
I have found one photo from a Athearn addat the HO Seeker site. I looked at my Walther’s catalogs and the newest I have is 2001 when I believe the Genesis 2-8-2 came out but no Pacific.
Right now I have to assume Athearn used the same loco with different road names.
I have done a lot of Google searching with very little results. Must not have been a good seller.
Mantua 4-6-2 Pacific’s here at Micro Mark Rich, and the price isn’t bad compared to some of the other vendors I’ve seen on the web. But it is undecked, painted black and with a long haul tender.
The Mantua steam engine will be a better puller, and probably last longer with the stock gearing than the Genesis. The Genesis will have better detail though, since it’s 30 years newer than the Mantua. Both are very smooth runners.
Thanks. What I am looking for right now is, did the NYC use the long haul tender that has the six wheel trucks? Still looking at Google searches with a second browser.
Well, another option would be to scrounge around for one of the old “Power House” series of 4-6-2’s, they were built by Samhongsa and very smooth runners with no particular problems that I know of, I have a couple of their USRA 2-8-2s and they run very smoothly and quietly.
This is really sad, that will all this wonderful product that has been made over the last 10-15 years, there is not one good, NON PRR K4, Pacific to be had.
I currently have two of the latest production IHC Pacifics, not bad for what they are, but not Spectrum, Proto or BLI by any means.
This is also my only area of brass ownership - several older brass USRA light Pacifics.
Still waiting for a good Pacific - likely to buy a 6 pack if someone makes one.
I just sold my IHC 4-6-2 with NYC markings. It was a pretty good model but I have so many BLI and Spectrum steamers I decided to downsize my roster. I would check Ebay for them as they aren’t made any longer. Mine was new and had been sitting on my shelf for a couple of years. It has the smaller tender with 4 wheel trucks. The detail wasn’t as good as Spectrum or BLI engines but was still a decent model to start from. Very smooth running. Good luck,
Thanks for the help and suggestions. I have located two Genesis Pacifics. From what I have found so far, the NYC did not use the long haul tender that has six wheel trucks and I do not care to have to find a suitable tender.
Do not care to do any more rivet counting about the loco.
I have my own mini connectors for wiring between the loco and tender if required.
