There was a scare inTerre Haute, IN a few days ago. Sure messed up rail traffic for awhile

Am I the only person that would see that and assume it fell off someone’s pick-up truck, instead of thinking it is a bomb?

kinda hard for a truck to get to that point of the bridge without going into the river.police are still looking for answers and the bomb squad took care of the package.go to wtol.com for more details.

Joe,

I agree with you, better safe than sorry bout that. Here’s a link to the news story.

They just blew up the sonde (sp?) off a weather balloon here this last weekend because it was a suspicious package floating down from the sky here. If folks don’t know what it it is in this day and age, the bomb squad gets called out.

I didn’t know they even used those things any more, with doppler radar and all that stuff. Back in the 50’s they would come down under a little parachute with a little collapsed cardboard box that you were supposed to put them in and send them back, postage prepaid. I remember finding a couple out in the boonies where I lived. It seemed pretty cool at the time.

It was an $11,000 water depth monitoring device. It had contact info, but you had to look inside. The flood of paranoia is still rising. Only a mater of time til it breaches the levies of sanity.

I live nearby Toledo and heard the story i have been to that bridge many times. It is sad but since 911 the USA has had to become paranoid. It is sad but better safe than sorry!

They are definately still in use. Those soundings provide critical data in regards to what is going on aloft. I always enjoyed hand plotting skew-ts, but that is a whole other subject.

Why didn’t the morons who put it there have identifying markings on the outside where the authorities could see it and not panic?

Radiosonde - battery, baroswitch, lots of circuits, funny shape. Can’t really fault anyone for being suspicious, although I’d like one for my collection, having launched more that a few of the devices into the sky…

Where?

I cross trained into weather when I left active duty Air Force and joined the Texas Air National Guard. I actually caught myself grabbing raw data and plotting just because I had nothing else to do. It was always nice to have a sounding that was relatively close upstream in the area I was forecasting for. The models are OK, but nothing beats the real thing. I am no longer in the TXANG and really miss it. I am thinking about getting active as a spotter with the local NWS office. I just hate to let all that training go to waste.
